I blame the toxic sludge. Can't walk on water when your feet are gone.

As nicely illustrated by your picture, River. :D

With all those heavy metals in it, walking on the sludge might not require any divine powers at all.

Until it reacts away your shoes. This isn't your ordinary, garden-variety toxic sludge. This is toxic sludge with a pH problem, and, likely, a redox problem.

Lali, you posted that pic and I couldn't resist. Not in this context. :damnfunny:

True. Take 2: It might not require you to divinely interfere with Archimedes' Principle.

The hrydrogen network takes another step.

I like the joined up thinking of this project.

Clock runs on energy it acquires by catching and digesting insects. Yes, really:

Is anyone else bothered by this? I think it's potentially quite dangerous. You're basically introducing a new "animal" into the food web. The marine robot idea seems particularly troublesome.

I would be, but carnivory is a spectacularly inefficient way to get your energy as long as there are any other options available. The clock is nifty, but not very practical.

The same technique could probably be adapted to generate electricity from microbes that live on garbage and/or sewage, though. That could be useful.

If I read the article correctly, this was more of a mobile robot that could seek out its prey.

Even if such a thing were possible and practical it wouldn't be able to reproduce, so there'd have to be a whole lot of them or they'd have to be very, very hungry before they could have any impact on the ecology of their "habitat". On the continuum of things humans might do or are already doing to mess up ecosystems, I'd think this ranks pretty low.

Well, probably, but now I have this great idea for a new sci-fi book. ;)

That really is interesting. I wonder which animals can detect this.

And, then, maybe there is something to that whole aura thing.

Do you think those light levels could be picked up by the human eye?

The article says no. But who knows. Maybe there are some outliers in the population who can.

That's kind of what I was thinking. And I'd bet money that some animals can do it, like birds being able to see ultraviolet light.
