The highest light level I see in their graph is about 500 photons/cm2/sec. That's practically nothing, but this article suggests that much might barely be visible as long as it's continuous. You'd have to be in pitch dark though so your night vision would be at its best, and it would probably depend on what color the light was (green would be best).

**reads Dave's article
**does a back-of-the-envelope calculation

You might want to eat lots and lots of carrots and other vitamin A rich foods, starting a few weeks beforehand, as well.

A cat could probably see it easier than we can. So could other animals with enhanced night vision. But, if your cat's responding to your moods, I'm betting that has more to do with your behavior and voice than anything else.

Can monkey's see color before the injection? Just curious because people say dogs can't watch TV but I am pretty sure my catahoula hound can watch TV, since she follows animals on the screen, even when there is no noise.

Yes; most primates have very good color vision. Even dogs are not exactly "color blind"; they just can't distinguish between as many colors as humans can.

Bulls are colour-blind. All that cape-waving that matadors do could be in any colour. It's only red so as to hide the bull's blood.

Shouldn't happen at all, of course.

I don't know about that. Our bull snorts and paws the ground when I wear red into the pasture. :Q I've been making a point not to do that, and he's pretty mellow otherwise.

Canadian physicist probes inner workings of a star

Contains beautiful picture and lots of cool info. Like this:
Quote:
A white dwarf contains about half the original mass of a star, but has collapsed into a dense object about the size of the Earth. A golf ball-sized piece of a white dwarf would weigh more than a tonne.

Does your baby cry in French or German?

Excerpt:
Quote:
The wail of a newborn may sound the same to the ears of sleep-deprived parents the world over, but according to scientists, that's not the case: Babies cry in the language their parents speak from the first days of life.

An international team of researchers said a study of 60 newborns suggested babies start to learn language in the womb, long before they utter their first coos or babbles -- and their wails can be distinguished according to the mother tongue.
Fascinating linguistic stuff.

That device has major geek points but is impractical. Especially if you live in an apartment block. All your neighbours can easily find out the "combination" just by listening :D

Astronomers find most Earth-like planet yet

From the article:
Quote:
"Since we found the super-Earth using a small ground-based telescope, this means that anyone else with a similar telescope and a good CCD camera can detect it too. Students around the world can now study this super-Earth," said David Charbonneau, head of the MEarth project.
Although, it also estimates the surface temperature to be about 200 C - so I guess we'll hold off on planning a m00t there.
