No one really knows what's going on with North Korea, but I've read that the working hypothesis for this current round of saber-rattling is Kim Il Jong has appointed his third son as his successor and now they're trying to make the son look strong. It's scary not matter which way you slice it though - N. Korea is very isolated and very...prickly.
One of my labmates is South Korean. He's a bit confused as well - in the past, North Korea's quieted down when the rest of the world has offered more food aid, but this is different. And he's scared, because Kim has declared the armistice void and most of my labmate's family is in Seoul.
He's also excited because apparently both North and South Korea are going to the World Cup. I didn't even know North Korea participated in international sports. Soccer is truly an amazing thing.
