I know, I know, everyone's always saying "think positive!".

Well, lately I've come to realize that negative thinking is quite powerful in its own right.

When something aches on me, I can tell myself firmly, "That DOESNT hurt" and it doesn't for a little while. If I feel a hunger pang, I can tell myself, "NO, you aren't hungry." and I'm not- at least for a half hour or so. And if I see something yummy, I can tell myself, "I don't like those anymore," and the yearning dies.

If the poison ivy rash on my leg starts to itch, I glare at it and think, "That does NOT itch." :x And it doesn't.

If I'm sleepy and I need to be awake, "I'm NOT sleepy!"

I've found I can be in an almost constant state of denial about moods, feelings & injuries, even sunburn! I refuse to be sick. I refuse to have a cut get infected. I refuse to fall to pieces when things go badly.

I don't know what ramifications this will have on my psyche- but it's quite likely that I'll be able to deny any bad effects as well! :P

Negative thinking.
The way to go.

Some schools of hypnosis claim that the unconscious mind doesn't understand negatives - for example, if you try to implant a suggestion such as "you will not wake up in the middle of the night and overeat", the mind will focus on "wake up in the middle of the night and overeat" and act accordingly.

Well, the conscious mind understands it well enough- for limited times, anyway. About half an hour for most things.

There's an old proverb - you will get your wish if you can stand at a street corner for one half hour without thinking about a white horse. :P

But seriously, saying firmly "I am not hungry" is not really negative thinking, it's assertiveness and it is, in a way, positive.

Denial can be a very strong thing. :D

Hope you are not feeling bad right now.

That popular book/dvd "The Secret" asserted the same thing. Supposedly you're supposed to concentrate on what you want. So if you want to get out of debt, you think about earning money not the debt.

Your comment really was helpful, Jude. :) I've been having trouble with acid reflux after I go to bed, and falling asleep thinking , "NO acid tonight!" just wasn't working. However, after reading what you said and realizing my subconscious had to be in charge of this, I tried "That stomach valve WILL hold tonight!" and visualized the pyloric sphincter holding tightly closed as I fell asleep. It really helped. So, thanks! :)
