:LMAO:

Tosh, I distinctly remember my Nan and Great-Aunt using that phrase...though I'm pretty certain they didn't abbreiate it!

Very funny, but problem is Sarah Palin doesn't care about the UK, in fact she sees the country as nothing more than a bunch of pinko commie bastards who hinder the freedom of America. Her response to the Brits making fun of Bristol's name would be total and complete utter conniption fit. But fear not...she hates most us too, just ask Letterman. This is because the woman is FUBAR. ;)

You know, I never realised that about Bristol... only lived there for nine years... :blackeye:

Ara-Anna, beeing meaning to ask someone this for ages. What does FUBAR actually stand for?

It's a US military term dating back to WWII. It stands for Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition (though polite people sometimes replace Fucked with Fouled). Not to be confused with its comrade from that same time period, SNAFU (Situation Normal: All Fucked Up), which was (I think) originally a comment on the ordinary state of things. Nowadays, though, SNAFU is sometimes used to describe a minor screw-up. FUBAR, OTOH, retains its original meaning.

And then, of course, there is "clusterfuck", aka "fustercluck" or "CF" or "Charlie Foxtrot", which is basically any situation that is a disorganized disaster, complete with people running around like chickens with their heads cut-off. Some people have said I create clusterfucks. I don't though. In fact, I hate them. I just seem to have a talent for bringing out the weaknesses in any given system that make a clusterfuck possible. =:)

:damnfunny:

I was actually used for that when they redid the computers in the x-ray lab three years ago. My boss pulled me aside, told me they had the new system up and running and could I please go break it. :LMAO:

I did hear a frenzied group of journalists and photographers called a goatfuck once. It was the way they were climbing on each others backs to get a view of their victim that made the term so apposite.

Then there is the saying, sweet Fanny Adams, which means ending up with nothing much. The initials might give a clue.
In 1869 new rations of tinned mutton were introduced for British sailors. They were unimpressed by it, and decided it must be the butchered remains of Fanny Adams - a 7 year old murdered by a solicitor. The way her body had been strewn over a wide area presumably encouraged speculation that parts of her had been found at the Royal Navy victualling yard in Deptford, which was a large facility which included stores, a bakery and an abattoir.

"Fanny Adams" became slang for mutton or stew and then for anything worthless — from which comes the current use of "sweet Fanny Adams" (or just "sweet FA") to mean "nothing at all". It can be seen as a euphemism for "fuck all".

This is not the only example of Royal Navy slang relating to unpopular rations: even today, tins of steak and kidney pudding are known as "baby's head".

The large tins the mutton was delivered in were reused as mess tins. Mess tins or cooking pots are still known as Fannys.

Lidless, you really should credit your sources when you are quoting verbatim. It's only...polite to do so. Plus it gives people a place to go should they want more information on the topic.

Plus, I already linked to a definition of the phrase in the first post on this page!

Actually, I edited it if you check word for word. I knew it already and was being lazy and had sweet FA time to write it in full. I'll give wiki credit when it's something I didn't already know.

Wow, that is really, really strange.

Don't know quite what happened there. The quote was from Lidless, and the blue was me, but it posted as if I was Lidless.

Which I am not.

I don't know. I seem to have edited the post when intending to comment - but I didn't do anything different.

I KNEW I'd fuck up being a Ranger. I'll try to fix it...

ETA: Okay, it's fixed. But the board thinks I'm Lidless, or something. Why else would I be able to edit his post like that, when I am only signed in under my own name? (Aha! I think I clicked "edit" instead of "quote" when responding and because I have Ranger POWERS, the board allowed me to do it.)

And now I'll repeat the BLUE bit. For everyone! Don't copy and paste (even with minor edits) without giving credit to your source. It's dishonest and misleading.
