Well let's see:

The bill as a whole was given only an hour for debate, of which, realistically, only a small amount could have been given to blasphemy. On top of that, on 6 TD's turned up to debate it.

Edit: Not to mention the fact that people who are pro-Lisbon II won't want it tagged on to that referendum, because it'll give Lisbon even more negative connotations than it had last time around, and the law cannot be removed without a referendum to alter the constitution. :bawl:

How can anyone know all the rules to all the religions and thus avoid blaspheming? That's going to be a tough law to follow and enforce.
Actually, that's not really the issue.

So ignorance of the law is no excuse, but ignorance of the religion is. You're right, it's a toughie to prove otherwise.

THE NEW blasphemy law will send Ireland back to the middle ages, and is wretched, backward and uncivilised, Prof Richard Dawkins has said.

The scientist and critic of religion has lent his support to a campaign to repeal the law, introduced by Atheist Ireland, a group set up last December, arising from an online discussion forum. The law, which makes the publication or utterance of blasphemous matter a crime punishable by a €25,000 fine, passed through the Oireachtas last week.

In a message read out at Atheist Ireland’s first agm on Saturday, Prof Dawkins said: “One of the world’s most beautiful and best-loved countries, Ireland has recently become one of the most respected as well: dynamic, go-ahead, modern, civilised – a green and pleasant silicon valley. This preposterous blasphemy law puts all that respect at risk.” He said it would be too kind to call the law a ridiculous anachronism.

“It is a wretched, backward, uncivilised regression to the middle ages. Who was the bright spark who thought to besmirch the revered name of Ireland by proposing anything so stupid?”

You'd think whoever wrote the bill would've at least had the sense to call it "hate speech" rather than "blasphemy".

Hey, don't confuse "Ireland" with its legislators. If we'd all done that we'd still be British.

I, for one, committed an offence when I heard that the law had passed. :doh1:

Any that includes "a substantial number of adherents" capable of achieving "outrage" in response to things someone else "publishes or utters".

I suppose that means it's ok to blaspheme against Buddhists since they're supposed to be serene, and against neo-pagans since there aren't very many, and against flat-Earthers in print since they can't read.

I am now wondering if my very presence is now banned in Ireland. I hope not. Ireland's on my bucket list.

A Catholic, a Protestant and a Jew walk into a bar. What a wonderful advertisment for religious tolerance.

The President has sent it for judicial review... There is a glimmer of sanity!

Really? I'm lost...

Of course, if it passes as it is, after review, that means it can't be challenged again at a later date, after it's already failed miserably...

According to this CBC article, it's been illegal in Ireland to publish blasphemous material since 1961 - the only thing that's new is now it's illegal to speak it.

Srsly? WTU?

I notice that Canada also has "blasphemous libel" listed as a crime. We'd better look into that...
