I spotted this on craigslist yesterday:
http://columbiamo.craigslist.org/cto/1645657329.html

(in case they remove it)
Quote:
VW TDI For SALE - $2800 (Kingdom City, MO)
For Sale 1997 VW TDI Jetta, 227,xxx miles, 5 speed, A/C, Power Steering, vg tires, new struts, alignment, I commuted with car for 3 years. Car has been outfitted to use Waste Vegatable Oil, I have run for approximately 30,000 miles on WVO. The WVO system could continue to be WVO, or double your fuel hauling with diesel in second tank. If customers do not want conversion I will remove but no discount. This car runs and drives great, all maintenance done, next timing belt change at 246,000. Oil used, Full Synthetic Rotella 5w40. John 573-220-6707
I really would like to have this car except for a couple of things. A: I don't have $2800 right now and can't afford maintenance on yet another car and B: We had a '95 Jetta up until last year and it was a real money pit- and I found out recently that late 90 jettas are notorious for that.

That said, I love VWs and have a great mechanic that works on our remaining two and always treats us fairly. I've wanted a TDI for a while now, and one that is converted to burn waste vegetable oil already really tickles my fancy. Since we got a deep fat fryer a few months ago, we've been discarding almost a gallon of oil every month or so and this would be the perfect use for it! And I could probably get more oil for free from some restaurant or another.

But..... money pit..... kids in college..... shouldn't do it. Won't do it. It would be cool to have another VW, but it's a baaaaaaaaaad idea.

So, what sort of car tempts you?

An Aston Martin Vantage. *drool*

Though you probably mean cars that a person can afford without selling their soul.

A Saab 900 from the 80's. This is pure sentimentalism on my part and so utterly impractical I haven't even looked too far into getting one. My current car runs and GM murdered Saab. :(

I must admit to thinking that a Jaguar is pretty awesome, but I'm really otherwise not "into" cars. Something safe and well-maintained. Fuel efficient and affordable are two other niceties. And nothing red.

My parents have a 1950's era Jag coupe that my dad has been wanting to restore forever. I remember how it ran back when I was a kid. It has a ridiculous number of cylinders in the engine (12, maybe?) and the VRRRROOOOOOOMMMM noise the engine made when gunned was impressive. One of those with a small passenger compartment and a long engine compartment.
It's kinda like this, only with a hard top:

It was parts cost which eventually sidelined the vehicle. Jag parts, especially from that era are hard to get and expensive.

But, it remains a cool car. :)

I really love the car I have - a Toyota Aygo.

For sentimental reasons, a VW Beetle. An old one. Either with separated back window or a cabriolet.

Why is this in the Symposium???

Hmm. Lots of cars. The Aston Martin DB9, the Lambourghini Countache, Ferrari Testarossa (still a classic).

But for a nice practical car, not overly showy? Maybe a Toyota Celica.

I have no idea.

Hey Maria, do you want it moved?

I dunno, I didn't really think about it. Cars could be a serious topic, I suppose.... although I hope no one feels a need to argue about them. If you want to move it, go ahead.

Might get more traffic in Turf. :) It's up to you, Maria. No need to move it from what I can tell, unless you want to.

I've never owned a car, haven't been behind the drivers seat of a car in over ten years, and would be perfectly happy never to have one. Yes, Steve has a car, and about once a month or so, I get in the passenger seat ;) If I had to own a car, I would want this one. That way I would be putting out about the same pollution as I do when I walk everywhere; i.e. none :)

When figuring out pollutability for people walking or cars running, you have to follow the energy back to the source and allow for the pollution that happens at every conversion step along the way.

Sure, a hydrogen powered fuel cell puts out zero pollution while it's running, but splitting the hydrogen in the first place requires energy and even if you are using wind power or solar power to split your hydrogen, it doesn't end there. The solar array or wind mill was probably made using fossil fuels, and so was the car.

Unless a person is a hunter/gatherer in primitive environment, then every technological gizmo they us, the clothes they wear and every bit of food they eat is produced using pollution causing fossil fuels. Just living in the modern world these days causes pollution at every step of the way.

Sure, I'd like a fuel cell car, too-- but to say it causes zero emmissions is only looking at the tip of the iceberg. Every step in it's production and fueling process is burning some form of fossil fuel.

That said, one of those would be better than a gasoline burner, that's for sure. But it's not free- as far as pollution goes.

Maria, I meant that when using the car I wouldn't be putting out any pollution. Of course production creates some. That's so obvious that I assumed it was a given.

Post-production, I'd actually be polluting more by walking, thinking about it. I exhale carbon dioxide when I breath, after all, and I'd be breathing more heavily walking than driving ;)

I want something newer than my 17 year old Saturn. Almost anything that isn't a gas hog will do.
