Unbelievable.

Father ordered to pay protester at funeral
Quote:
The father of a marine killed in Iraq in 2006 has been ordered to pay $16,000 to the preacher who organized an anti-gay protest during his son's funeral. On the day of the funeral in Maryland for the 20-year-old young soldier killed in combat, Baptist preacher Fred Phelps organized a demonstration just a few metres away and waved signs that read "Matt is in Hell" and "America is damned." The father of the late soldier, Albert Snyder, filed suit against the preacher. First a court ruled with Snyder, but that finding was thrown out on appeal in September when a court said Phelps was exercising his constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech. Phelps then asked for court costs and the appeal court agreed.
Can you imagine first losing your son, and then being ordered to pay such a large sum of money to that walking turd?

It's appalling. If someone started a fund for the poor man, I'd contribute.

Insanity rules the day. In this case Shakespeare... er ... Charles Dickens ... was right in OLIVER TWIST when Mr. Bumble said .... the law is an ass. Or at least that one appeals court most certainly deserve that label.

looks like there is a fund:

http://www.matthewsnyder.org/help.html

edit: there's also a facebook page , and it says that Bill O'Reilly has pledged to pay the entire amount that Al Snyder owes.

Excess donations to the fund will go to start a scholarship for returning veterans.

Normally I would have nothing good to say about Bill O'Reilly but if that report is true, here is to Bill O.

Well done!!!!!

I'd be more than willing to contribute, but I'd much, much prefer to contribute to a legal fund for Mr. Snyder to fight this ridiculous ruling.

I hate the idea of my money going to Fred Phelps. It's just obscene.

That first place I linked to IS a fund to help with legal costs. They say this at the bottom of the page:
Quote:
In the event that more money is received than necessary to pay for the costs associated with my lawsuit against Phelps and his clan, any excess money will go to benefit veterans returning from the war, in the form of a scholarship. No donations will be paid to me. Your money will be put to good use. First, we will be able to fight back against Phelps and his followers when they retaliate (they have already threatened to do so). Second, if there is excess money, a well deserved veteran will receive help to further his or her education. Again, I will not personally receive ANY money.
If O'Reilly is going to cover the case costs, then I guess all other monies donated will go towards creating a scholarship fund.

When I first looked at the facebook page this morning, there were 87,000 supporters. Now there are 95,000. :Q If many of them are donating money, that could get to be a sizable fund.

Shakespeare, eh?

Didn't he write Huckleberry Finn, too?

Jude - all kidding aside... if you made a list of the often quoted lines from Shakespeare or Wilde or Dickens, I think any of them would dwarf (no pun intended) any such list from the good Professor. Yes, I have a few favorite lines from HOBBIT and LOTR but in terms of quotable lines that live with the larger culture, I think JRRT is not in that league..... at least yet.

Maria

I joined the FB page too, I saw it on your page.

I think this judgement is wrong and for once I am right there with Bill O'Reilly. WBC brings together Liberals and Conservatives in a mutual dislike.

Amen. :toast: We can all have a beer together and share some great literature, too.

Now, bring out that book by Shakespeare and start:

"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun..."

It is scary that that passes for "freedom of speech."

I hope that this father can appeal to someone to get this horrible decision overturned. I would gladly contribute to a legal fund for him.
