Family Radio Inc is predicting that the world will end on 21 May, 2011.

My question is, how will they explain it away when it doesn't?

Well, here's one thing I can predict for certain: the Rapture will NOT happen on May 21, 2011.

The Bible clearly says no one knows the day or time. So the minute someone says, "It will happen then!" they've just guaranteed that it will NOT happen then.

Dorks.

A couple ski seasons ago, as we rode up a lift at Breckenridge, S and I spotted a pair of skis and poles lying off to the side of the run, like they'd just been abandoned. There were no footprints nearby. My conclusion since has therefore been that the Rapture happened and that was the only person who went. :D

 I don't quite follow the logic of that. Does that mean if everyone in the world individually predicts every second of every day for the next year as The End --- then we'd be safe for the coming year?

If so, wouldn't it behoove us to all make sure every moment of every day is covered by a prediction by someone, so that our world doesn't end suddenly?

:LMAO:

I think God is bigger than that, but I suppose theoretically you could attempt something like that.

God must have a pretty good sense of humour, judging by some stuff . . . He might get a chuckle out of Maria's preemptive strike. :)

I'm all with Maria on this...we should just start throwing out days and such.

Wait... That scripture says.. NO MAN

Therefore it leaves it totally open for the Eowyn Clause.... :doh1:

Until a couple of minutes ago I was watching a documentary about the current craze for teh 2012 Apocalypse. Then Oz seized the remote and they're watching Futurama.

Strictly speaking, someone could guess right without knowing, and the language would still be satisfied. What I want to know is, if these guys are so sure, will they sign a contract saying I get all their money on May 22?

Your not the only one wondering that - Hemant Mehta and a couple of others sent them an email asking them much the same thing. Last I heard, nobody's heard back yet. Personally, I don't expect them to show any accountability at all when they're proved wrong.

I also wonder if they've ever read this delightful tidbit from Deuteronomy 18:
Quote:
But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death. You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?” If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken.
:P

Very true, Jude. If you're wrong, then your message was not of God.

Interesting. My college diary has the 21st of May '11 in twice. The 20th (my birthday) doesn't occur in that venerable tome.

It must be a sign. :toast:

I have a much simpler answer: a dragon carried off the skier.

This is refusing to die down:
The Washington Post wrote:
RALEIGH, N.C. -- If there had been time, Marie Exley would have liked to start a family. Instead, the 32-year-old Army veteran has less than six months left, which she'll spend spreading a stark warning: Judgment Day is almost here.

Exley is part of a movement of Christians loosely organized by radio broadcasts and websites, independent of churches and convinced by their reading of the Bible that the end of the world will begin May 21, 2011.

.....

She is organizing traveling columns of RVs carrying the message from city to city, a logistics challenge that her military experience has helped solve. The vehicles are scheduled to be in five North Carolina cities between now and the second week of January, but Exley will shortly be gone: overseas, where she hopes to eventually make it back to Iraq.

"I don't really have plans to come back," she said. "Time is short."
Somebody tell this poor woman she's wasting her life.

Oh well, I guess she'll figure that our for herself on 22 May.

 Misguided.

I'd like to know their rationale, actually, for picking that date. And it says that it marks the beginning of the end of the world. Now that might make a little more sense, from a biblical standpoint. I'm figuring they should be aware of the verse that says that no one can know the hour and day, but if they're trying to say that this date will usher in the beginning of the Tribulation or something rather than the return of Christ or the Rapture that makes more sense.

I'm not saying they're right, mind you. I'm just saying it makes more sense.

Hmm, the beginning of the end of the world? That might be quite brilliant, actually. All one would have to do on May 21st, 2011 is say, "Look at that horrible multi-car accident in Beijing! This is clearly a sign from God that we are in the end of days!" and they would be right according to their own prediction.

I personally think the "beginning of the end" happened when all those birds and fish simultaneously dropped dead in Arkansas. What an odd place for the Rapture to start. :)

Oops, I didn't even link to the article I quoted:

Washington Post article

There is an explanation of what passes for "rationale" (a term I use very loosely here):
Quote:
Camping, 89, believes the Bible essentially functions as a cosmic calendar explaining exactly when various prophecies will be fulfilled.

The retired civil engineer said all his calculations come from close readings of the Bible, but that external events like the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948 are signs confirming the date.

"Beyond the shadow of a doubt, May 21 will be the date of the Rapture and the day of judgment," he said.
And:
Quote:
The doctrine known as the Rapture teaches that believers will be taken up to heaven, while everyone else will remain on earth for a period of torment, concluding with the end of time. Camping believes that will happen in October.

"If May 21 passes and I'm still here, that means I wasn't saved. Does that mean God's word is inaccurate or untrue? Not at all," Warden said.
