Why the long face, Dave? I wasn't planning on hanging around more than a hundred years or so. Were you? :D

I actually just now took the time to read some of their rationale for choosing May 21st. Interesting.

They are basing this date off of the time of Noah's Flood, add 7000 years, and then factor in some verses in Revelation that talk about a specific period of days of silence. Also, according to their calculations, it ties in significantly (numerically-speaking) with the exact date of Jesus' death.

It's quite good, in its own way.

I still doubt they're right, particularly based on some of their other beliefs, but it's at least interesting to read.

But, if I'm not here on May 22nd, then I'll be eating crow in heaven. And, really, I'm okay with that. :blackeye:

So which timezone is heaven in? Have they accounted for leap years? Do the Bible's timelines account for leap years, given that the concept didn't exist then? And how about those leap seconds?

Lali, do you have a link for where you read that? I'd be interested in reading it over. May 21st seems so pulled-out-of-a-hat and to know it really WASN'T is still nutso but in an interesting way.

And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.”

Actually, Dave, they did try to account for all of that. :)

Jonny, this article explains most of it:

http://www.familyradio.com/graphical/li ... gment.html

Honestly, just skip down about halfway till you start seeing some numbers that aren't bible verse references, unless you are really bored today!

So if anyone wants to just drop off their stuff at my house due to the rapture...I can store it for them  Saves me the trouble of looting after the rapture.

So... I just read the math in Lali's link, and I have to ask ...is this the Gregorian calendar, or the Jewish calendar, and wasn't there something about promising not to destroy the world again... something about a rainbow and a covenant....? Sorry, it's been a while since I read Genesis.

I think they have figured out (in their minds, anyway) these dates using the Jewish calendar but adapted it to the Gregorian calendar.

The rainbow was a promise not to destroy the world again by a flood. The bible does speak of a future destruction of the world by fire.

These people are speaking about the Time of Tribulation, a period of severe judgment and catastrophe. Many Christians believe that prior to this period of Tribulation (or at least sometime before the worst of it all), Jesus will Rapture, or call up to heaven, all true believers.

Sorry if you knew all of that already.

Despite the fact that Revelations explicitly says the opposite: that the world will end, a seven headed, ten horned dragon with the whore of Babylon riding on its back will come and consume the earth, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth, and THEN new Jerusalem will descend from heaven and all the good righteous Christians will live there happily ever after.

The notion of a rapture is a heretical one.

Not really, Crucifer. Heretical is a strong term. Controversial? Yes. A view that not all Christians share? Yes. Heretical? I don't think so.

But it definitely requires taking the passages throughout the Bible (OT and NT) that deal with the endtimes as a whole, rather than as separate pieces.

I've been reading a few interesting articles about what happens to the believers when it doesn't happen. The not-so-staunch just sort of drift away, but the zealot HAS to explain it.

When it was the Millerites, for one example, the explanation was that they had prayed so hard god changed his mind. Not sure how to wrap the brain around that: it makes no sense at all - not that any of it makes any sense.

"Cognitive dissonance" is an interesting concept, and it will be exhibited by a number of these folks on May 22.

Many are planning post-rapture looting:

They aren't serious, I hope.

Well, really, besides any family members who might get left behind and need/want our stuff, you guys are welcome to it! I'd consider it a fair trade for coming in and taking care of my animals. :Wooper: They'll need good homes.

What's the criteria for getting "raptured", anyway? What kind of population loss are we talking about? 5%? 10%? .005%?
