Mammoth 'could be reborn in four years'
Quote:
The woolly mammoth, extinct for thousands of years, could be brought back to life in as little as four years thanks to a breakthrough in cloning technology.
I don't know whether to be horrified or thrilled about the possibility :scared:

Sounds a lot like the plot to another Jurassic Park movie. :suspicious:

Wow. Cool, in a way, and terrifying in another. Did these people not watch Jurassic Park? Or read the book?!

I've cried a thousand oceans, and I would cry a thousand more if that's what it takes to sail you home.

How about cloning the species you've killed off in this millennium, first?

Fascinating. :) I wonder how difficult it will be to keep the creature tame? If it's handled from birth by skilled elephant trainers, it shouldn't be impossible.

Other than to say, "Wow, look at this cool thing we did!" why bother? *E* is right.

The Mammoth's habitat is LONG gone. Their range was in the shadow of the great ice sheets, in a very cold and very dry climate.

I have to say I'm still skeptical about this. DNA is degraded over time like any other chemical, regardless of exposure to cold. Even the "most viable" cells probably wouldn't have a perfectly intact genetic code.

If you added a strategically-placed comma, you could make that into an insult :D

Yes, but REL hasn't been back long enough for me to start giving him crap. And Congress is well-supplied with dodos.

You know you've been facewashed when you try and "like" this. Anyway, I... like this comment.

Reading in Scientific American, it is suggested that one of the reasons the Mammoth went extinct is that it was out-competed by the Bison which had recently emigrated from Asia. They out-competed the Mammoth, the giant Beaver, the Camel, and the American Horse.

I wanna eat a dodo.

Not a whole one mind. I saw a skeleton of a dodo in the museum of my son's university.

Just how do beavers and bison compete in any way? Different habitat, different food needs.

Giant Beaver

Apparently this giant was not a specialized wood eater.

Actually, thanks for that image, CG: thought I had gotten a shot of one at the Royal Ontario Museum last year, but it is nowhere to be found! I've joined the ranks of male university students everywhere in hunting for beave.

Speaking of high-brow humor, the ROM's giant beaver was right around the corner from a fossilized sloth turd. I was texting a lot of pictures to my little brother that day. :P He's the kind of person who draws giant dicks in the sand and poses next to them for his facebook profile.

If you think this is off topic: just consider the evolutionary implications of my previous two paragraphs...
