I'm not gonna point and laugh at this, it will just be interesting to see how things play out. Basically, the head honchos of internet trolling are now targeting some real life trolls. I kind of wish they just went ahead with it, rather than give the church time to write their butthurt legal reports before any good is done. The WBC, however, has always given notification before any of their pickets, so it's fair enough. :P

Also "hacktivist" is a beautiful word to describe Anonymous. As are the words Anon themselves use to describe Westboro!

Read at ONTD via here:

Quote:
Anonymous, the hacktivist group responsible for bringing down Gawker Media and major credit card companies, has set its sights on a new target: The Westboro Baptist Church.

In an open letter to the country's leader hate parade, the black hat operators put the Phelps clan on notice:

We, the collective super-consciousness known as ANONYMOUS – the Voice of Free Speech & the Advocate of the People – have long heard you issue your venomous statements of hatred, and we have witnessed your flagrant and absurd displays of inimitable bigotry and intolerant fanaticism. We have always regarded you and your ilk as an assembly of graceless sociopaths and maniacal chauvinists & religious zealots, however benign, who act out for the sake of attention & in the name of religion.

Being such aggressive proponents for the Freedom of Speech & Freedom of Information as we are, we have hitherto allowed you to continue preaching your benighted gospel of hatred and your theatrical exhibitions of, not only your fascist views, but your utter lack of Christ-like attributes. You have condemned the men and women who serve, fight, and perish in the armed forces of your nation; you have prayed for and celebrated the deaths of young children, who are without fault; you have stood outside the United States National Holocaust Museum, condemning the men, women, and children who, despite their innocence, were annihilated by a tyrannical embodiment of fascism and unsubstantiated repugnance. Rather than allowing the deceased some degree of peace and respect, you instead choose to torment, harass, and assault those who grieve.

Your demonstrations and your unrelenting cascade of disparaging slurs, unfounded judgments, and prejudicial innuendos, which apparently apply to every individual numbered amongst the race of Man – except for yourselves – has frequently crossed the line which separates Freedom of Speech from deliberately utilizing the same tactics and methods of intimidation and mental & emotional abuse that have been previously exploited and employed by tyrants and dictators, fascists and terrorist organizations throughout history.

ANONYMOUS cannot abide this behavior any longer. The time for us to be idle spectators in your inhumane treatment of fellow Man has reached its apex, and we shall now be moved to action. Thus, we give you a warning: Cease & desist your protest campaign in the year 2011, return to your homes in Kansas, & close your public Web sites.

Should you ignore this warning, you will meet with the vicious retaliatory arm of ANONYMOUS: We will target your public Websites, and the propaganda & detestable doctrine that you promote will be eradicated; the damage incurred will be irreversible, and neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover. It is in your best interest to comply now, while the option to do so is still being offered, because we will not relent until you cease the conduction & promotion of all your bigoted operations & doctrines.

The warning has been given. What happens from here shall be determined by you.

A preemptive admission of illegal hacking? Well this wouldn't be the first time the group invited the attention of federal authorities. But something tells me exactly zero people would have a problem if Anonymous went on an anti-Westboro bender. Least of all, well, us.

But how important is their website, anyway? Does anyone actually read it? They get most of their attention via their protests at funerals.

If all they do is hack into the WBC website, I don't think anyone will actually notice :(

True enough, if that's all they plan on then bfd. But all the media reports about each picket has to come from somewhere, yes? Someone's checking in on them. Even if just to confirm press releases that WBC write themselves.

Guess what I had in mind was the fact that Anonymous had this world-wide Scientology protest a few years ago (with the Guy Fawkes masks), so a face-to-face with the WBC should be no problem in that respect.

Someone mentioned that it could be fun if any ~tawdry secrets~ were hacked from the site. :P Sadly, I think the WBC doesn't really have anything to hide. Except for the extent of their inbreeding, maybe.

So what does this group do? Hack websites and...? I mean, I hope they do something to stop these disgusting people, but I'm just curious as to what they can do.

I like the term "internet vigilantes", though it doesn't imply all the heinous shit they do. Think about nerddom in general - some will use their powers for good, others evil. 4chan/Anonymous allows for a pretty huge exchange of information and ideas, so while in some cases they have the numbers to protest Scientology and create safe ISPs for Iranian students in the fallout of that election, they can also simply troll facebook memorials of dead children and program flashing animations onto epilepsy education sites. When they're not being useful, they're pretty typical computer geeks, with all that entails.

I mean, 4chan is an enormous place - think about stuff we've done at moots, and project that onto a population of several million, then invite way more banned members, remove their class and good taste, then give them masks to hide behind. We might get a hundred pizzas delivered to the soldier from that video who kicked a puppy off a cliff, but we'd probably spam a lot of innocent people with porn just for the fun of it too. :uhoh:

I like reading about internet culture and how people behave, so it's all pretty interesting to me. Wikipedia is always a place to start, and I liked Cracked's coverage of the Jessi Slaughter story here (scroll down to #6): http://www.cracked.com/article_18950_9-major-stories-everyone-got-wrong-this-year.html

The plot thickens - it may be that WBC faked the whole thing as an excuse to sue Anonymous.

Um, just read the article - I don't feel like summarizing

I'm kind of heartbroken about it because the apparent faked letter was so beautifully written, and true. For the WBC to have composed it themselves, says they're either really good at mimicking others, or truly are aware of how hateful and crass their actions are, but forge on regardless.

I don't understand. :( Is this in the name of God's hate for the purposes of God's love? I don't think it works that way. :scared:

As I keep saying over and over, once I read Dave LF's post, this isn't about God at all. Not one tiny bit! And it's not about God for these people either. They are a bunch of con artists who use the name of God as a cover for their true purpose--making money by suing people. It's not about God, and it never was. It's about money. Period. God is just the convenient means for them to have their "rights" violate so they can sue.

Money. That is all they are after.

I do not think it's inappropriate to pray an imprecatory prayer over these people. :x And I'm put in mind of Jesus destroying the tables of the money changers at the Temple. God is not pleased when people use Him falsely to make money.

So far people seem to have got away with it in most places.

I disagree, Tosh, though I certainly acknowledge that it sometimes seems that way. In any case, I guess I have the luxury of believing in eternal consequences. (And I don't mean that I'm looking forward to people burning in hell. There can be eternal consequences besides hell.)

Anonymous wasn't interested in WBC at first, but WBC was interested in anonymous.

The way WBC supports itself is by suing people who offend them. More and more people have been basically ignoring them, and that dried up their revenue stream. That's the whole reason they protest at the funerals of soldiers, they hope someone will lose their cool and do something actionable.

Anonymous has bigger things on their plate right now. They caused irreparable harm to Scientology, although the war has sort of petered out. They are confronting Australia's internet censorship, where you can't have porn with women with A cups because the small cup size means pedos might view it and imagine the small breasted women are actually no breasted girls. And of course they are working on the whole Julian Assange / Bradley Manning / Wikileaks / HBGary issue. They love Assange, who they call "Bad-Ass-ange". And they're even involved in the Middle East uprisings.

But WBC kept calling them out and calling them out. Anonymous knew why. It was so WBC could sue the ISPs of any hacker who attacked them. More money, of course. WBC made it convenient by dropping firewalls to make it easy to get in, and still nothing. So they resorted to a fake attack and blamed it on anonymous. That got their ire up, and they hacked DURING the broadcast where they described the attack.

Anonymous shuts down Westboro Baptist Church site -- during a live interview - Salon Article

Anonymous' message to WBC

The thing is, they don't particularly want to go after WBC. It's not the way Anonymous operates. They believe in freedom of speech, even bad or disgusting speech. They dislike WBC with great intensity, but believe WBC has every right to speak. The reason they went after Scientology is because they practice censorship. Anonymous hates censorship almost as much as they hate anyone who would hurt a cat.

God help you if you hurt a cat.

So they took the bait and walked right into the trap, and admitted it publicly? I'm not sure how smart that was.

But WBC doesn't have the necessary information to sue anybody. Anonymous is more clever than that. This was a "warning shot" from Anonymous, saying "leave us alone".
