Good article! Thanks for sharing. :)

It might be interesting to read Melania Trump's biography.

They confirmed Sessions. Which made David Duke happy.

I swear, the only bright spot in the last two weeks was Chris Evans morphing into actual Captain America on Twitter. (Evans played Captain America in the Marvel movies.)

Sigh. :(

I did see that, Frelga, about Chris Evans. :)

Yes, that's depressing. Sessions and the person nominated to run the EPA (can't remember the name at the moment*) are the two I distrust the most. Which might be a relative sort of distrust, given Trump's picks.
Though I have to admit I feel somewhat more positive about Tillerson than when I just knew he was Exxon Mobil CEO. Especially after he divested pretty thoroughly from his company. Of course, he seems to be among those not in the inner circle when it comes to policy decisions. The number of former Breitbart staffers among the White House staff is pretty disturbing.

*Someone known for repeatedly suing the EPA.

My first reaction to Melania Trump's biography was a cross between pity and rolling eyes. It reads like something you do when you don't have much to say about someone, and instead of having the sense to keep it simple, you inflate everything to fill up space. Unless it's changed lately, it was mostly a paragraph about the magazines and photographers she's modeled for, followed by a short paragraph of charity participation, along the lines of "opened the XYZ event for charity A". I stumbled across it accidentally when I was trying to double-check a fact about Michelle Obama (who had an enormous, non-inflated biography), and the White House pages had changed, but the search engine links hadn't caught up yet. I lost my pity for Melania Trump when she started suing organizations that had already apologized and retracted stories, because that could hurt her future profits. Seems counterproductive, actually. I wouldn't have paid the slightest attention to a rumor from a tabloid that she had once worked for an escort service. But when I hear that the first lady of the US has filed a $150 million libel lawsuit, I take notice.

So this is 2017. Lawyers are national heroes. FLOTUS sues news outlets for jeopardizing her chances to profit from her position. POTUS tweets in all caps. And Kim Kardashian tweets timely facts and statistics. https://twitter.com/KimKardashian/statu ... 0337283073

Also, Captain America fights KKK on Twitter.

... and there's talk of appointing Sarah Palin as ambassador to Canada :Q

She's gonna undo all the hard work I've done to try to convince my friends that you're not a bunch of ignorant buffoons :(

It's actually a secret US plot, Jude. We're hoping she'll like Canada so much that she'll stay and you guys can deal with her. ;)

I saw an interesting opinion piece about Gorsuch on The Hill, by someone who has worked with him.

Quote:
I served with Neil Gorsuch on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit for more three years, before I left the bench to teach constitutional law at Stanford University.
I'm rather hoping they confirm him quickly, before Trump decides to withdraw the nomination (can he do that?) and pick someone who's less likely to criticize him.

This does not sound good, if the Senate confirms Pruitt, the name I couldn't remember earlier.
http://thehill.com/policy/energy-enviro ... ive-orders
Quote:
President Trump aims to sign executive orders cutting into the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) climate work shortly after his nominee to lead the agency is confirmed by the Senate, according to a report.

Trump will attend a swearing-in ceremony for EPA nominee Scott Pruitt at agency headquarters after the Senate confirms Pruitt, Inside EPA reported this week.

At that event, an administration source told Inside EPA that Trump will sign executive orders related to the agency’s climate work and that they could “suck the air out of the room,” according to the report. ....

Senate Republicans are aiming to vote on Pruitt’s nomination this week. Nearly every Democrat is likely to oppose Pruitt, but he is expected to have enough Republican support to win confirmation.
Senate Republicans are presumably OK with this. If our state had a Republican senator, I'd be letting them have an earful.

And another attack on the environment by Senate Republicans.
http://thehill.com/policy/energy-enviro ... pecies-law
Quote:
Senate Republicans considered ideas Wednesday to “modernize” the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and solve the problems they and their constituents have long decried.

Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said at the hearing that he hopes to change the law to give more voice to landowners, industry groups and others who think species protections hamper business or other land uses.
We all know this isn't an attempt to improve the law, but to gut it.

Oh, and some of them really like Guantanamo and want to expand it:
http://thehill.com/policy/national-secu ... tanamo-bay
Quote:
Gardner joined 10 other Senate Republicans last week in reaffirming support for the controversial detention facility, sending a letter to President Trump urging him to halt the transfer of detainees out of the prison and strengthen U.S. operations there.
Quote:
“They need to be there with some of the worst elements around the globe, as we keep them in a secure facility, where he can get the kind of information we need that can make a difference in our efforts to stop terrorists.”
Is the phrase I've bolded advocating torture?

Trump is, of course, totally on board with this:
Quote:
Draft executive orders to keep the prison open and demanding suspected Islamic State in Iraq and Syria militants who are captured be sent there have been floated since Trump took office last month.

Apparently our prime minister was assured that Sarah Palin will not be the U.S. ambassador to Canada.

You folks are still stuck with her

We've got a loose-lipped, arrogant egotistical TV personality ruling the White House, taking advice from someone who founded a "far right" website, trying to dismantle environmental laws, hanging up on the Australian prime minister, calling legitimate news sources "fake news," attacking judges, and discussing the response to a North Korean missile launch with the Japanese prime minister in the public restaurant of his golf club (in full view of other patrons, one of whom actually took a photo of the person carrying the nuclear launch code briefcase), and you're worried?! ;) I'll take a sane government over that, any day - even if you throw in Palin. :D

It had better be a pretty big bedroom - you might have a lot of takers. ;)

Had to share this. You have to wonder how much longer Republican senators can keep ignoring Trump's delusional behavior.

http://thehill.com/homenews/administrat ... conference
Quote:
Trump repeatedly insisted that his administration is off to a smooth and effective start while airing his grievances against the intelligence community, the political press and Senate Democrats, whom he slammed for blocking his Cabinet picks.

... This week has been a particularly tough one for the Trump White House, which saw national security adviser Michael Flynn resign under pressure and Labor Secretary nominee Andy Puzder withdraw his controversial nomination because of Republican objections.
Quote:
"Tomorrow, they will say, ‘Donald Trump rants and raves at the press,’ the president said, mocking reporters. “I’m not ranting and raving. I'm just telling you. You know, you're dishonest people. But I'm not ranting and raving. I love this. I'm having a good time doing it.”
Quote:
Trump needled a number of news outlets, criticizing the BBC and joking with CNN reporter Jim Acosta, whom he angrily shut down last month at a press conference in New York. Trump said he had made sure that his new Labor nominee, Alexander Acosta, was no relation.

He tossed out plenty of head-scratching lines, such as when he asked a veteran African-American radio journalist to arrange a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus.
Quote:
Trump brushed aside arguably the biggest controversy of his presidency, the botched rollout of his travel ban. He chastised the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld a court order blocking it, as being wracked by “chaos” and “turmoil.”
Quote:
But as many presidents before him have, he placed the blame on his predecessor.

“To be honest, I inherited a mess. It's a mess. At home and abroad, a mess,” he said. “We'll take care of it folks; we're going to take care of it all. I just want to let you know, I inherited a mess.”
And here's the full story behind the weird interaction with the African American reporter:
http://thehill.com/homenews/administrat ... ack-caucus
In which Trump also claims that he was planning to meet with a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, but Rep Cummings backed out:
Quote:
"“[Cummings] was all excited and then he said, ‘Oh, I can’t move it,’ ” Trump said. "'It might be bad for me politically. I can’t have that meeting.’”
Which Cummings denies.

Oh, and this - no idea whether this is normal for a new administration or not.
http://thehill.com/homenews/administrat ... cks-report

Quote:
Six White House staffers were removed from the administration on Thursday for failing an FBI background check, according to Politico.
...
The Hill asked the White House for comment.
I can't wait to see what Trump says. Morbid curiosity, I suppose.

His style reminds me of Khrushchev a bit. Minus obsession with corn, wartime military experience, and general benevolence.
