Well I took a paper version of this test and I am an ENFJ. The profile even said I plan events. Which I do!!!! That was just scary!!!!

Ah, good thread :D

Though most current research psychologists in the personality area find the myers-briggs (Jungian) thingy supposedly not reliable and outdated and subscribe mostly to the Big Five model, I like it, because Im a bit biased in my Jungian leanings. :P

I usually test as an INFP... occasionally INFJ. :)

I come with psych babble ;)

The Big Five model, or Five Factor Model, alterantively called the "OCEAN" model (as an acronym of the five thingies it entails) is apparently the preffered method of measuring personality nowadays. It views personality as consisting of 5 distinct dimensions: Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. Research psychologists apparently found these 5 clear factors upon analyzing a host of personality test questions and performing factor analysis to see how many and what factors the answers best load onto (statistical procedure that is evil and I cannot begin to explain...rather irrelevant here, fortunatelly.). They also claim that doing a lexical analysis of many languages, personality trait words somehow cluster in these five areas.

These dimensions are factors not types, so people dont fall into categories but vary continuously along each dimension.

The five dimensions are sometimes broken down into more specific subscales. Thus, for example, Neuroticism includes subscales of Anxiety, Anger, Depression, Self-Consciousness, Immoderation, Vulnerability...

The test works on the basis of comparing people to norms within the population.

Here are sites for more info:
http://www.personalityresearch.org/bigfive.html
http://www.centacs.com/quickstart.htm

Here you can take the test, called the IPIP-neo or its short version:
http://www.personalitytest.net/ipip/ipipneo1.htm

:) hope that helps... sorry if I wasnt thorough enough, its late and Im a bit tired  ;)

I’ve taken an IPIP-neo test before but found it both inaccurate. It basically cast me as an ISFJ; unimaginative and overemotional, and I don’t see how it could be applied is the quick and easy manner that the MBTI is.

Its proponents claim that it is taking out the MBTI, but I haven’t seen the evidence; there are far more books and websites out there on the MBTI than any other system (I checked my University Library’s psyche section). It identifies valid problems with the MBTI, but in trying to fix them it creates an overcomplex model IMHO: INTJ is one thing, N+E=O+A-F= is entirely another.

Is it just me or is b77 home to relatively few extroverts? :P
Maybe messageboards draw more on the introvert market by their very nature.... :scratch :P

Lord_Morningstar, many have found the myers briggs unreliable too... Im just conveying what the current consensus in the psych research community is. :) Im myself a bit nostalgic for the "types" categories... though in no means do I believe that x many "types" can perfectly include all people on the planet.

Personality research is still an area of many theories, and little facts when you get down to it...!

I just took that test .... I need a nap ;) man that was long.

LM - I'm a little shocked that you referred to ISFJ's as unimaginative and overemotional :( They are the teachers and care givers - and I haven't found them to be either. Perhaps I misunderstood you?

I figured I was an INTP according to Lord_M's initial post. Sylthian's test seconded it. I'm not sure what that says about me... ;) But I've been accused of having my head in the clouds too often. :D

Well, they are compared to Intuitives and Thinkers respectively. Being a Sensor type with leading Si and inferior Ne they are very concrete and traditional, and being a Feeler with an Extraverted Feeling function makes them emotional both inside and out. I could have been a bit more subtle, or used the terms ‘practical and warm’ (which means more or less the same thing) but I’ve given up trying to be nice here ;).

I would like to thank you for this thread, L_M, at both TORC and here. I think, like LalaithUrwen, that I appreciate the "permission" I've gained to simply be me.

I really like that.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who went: :Q :Q :( upon reading that post.

Knowing that ISFJs take criticism really harshly, that could have been better worded indeed. :P

Hmmm, in retrospect, my post wasn't very nice. Therefore, you can substitute the words 'concrete' and 'ethically driven in decision making' for 'unimaginative' and 'overemotional'.

It's okay. I'm not feeling too over-emotional this morning, so I can handle it. ;):D

Sounded like a generalisation to me, and LordM shhould know by now you should never generalise :damnfunny

I have arrived to raise the percentage of INFPs. We need all the numbers we can get.

At the time I first took M-B, almost 20 years ago, I was working a job that required constant dealing with other people, intense focus on details, dispassionate analysis and numerous deadlines per day. No wonder I was going bonkers. What an eye-opener!
