That's pretty much insanely good. The top half looked like b/w photography to me. Not that the bottom half doesn't look great also. I can't put my finger on it - maybe the angle is just more complimentary for the big part of the leaf, since it's twisting and therefore looks three dimensional.

I really like it.

Beautiful shading.

So, can I learn how to do that too, or do you have to be born with it?

What I do is almost entirely through trial and error. I don't really feel like I know what I'm doing and so I feel uncomfortable calling myself "good".
My process tends to be "Maybe it'll look right if I brighten this part.....no, that's not right....let me try a little darker....no, that's not right.....maybe it just needs to be blended smoother.....no, that's not right......what if I darkened this other part a little first......no, that's not right......" and you do that 50 times until that square inch looks close-ish to what you want. Then you move on to the next square inch! :P
I feel like my real talent is being patient and persistence not, you know, knowing how to draw.

I've done a fair bit of cross-stitching in the past - especially good for making me rest when I was pregnant! I love the detailed, larger designs with lots of beads and sparkly thread!
Here are a few of my finished pieces:

Spring - one of a set of four, naturally enough!

Guardian Angel

Fairy Godmother

A Mother's Prayer Quilt

And one I'm still working on...Cinderella

I love the color purple, so "Spring" really appeals to me. "Cinderella" is coming along beautifully!

Oooh, those are lovely! I enjoy cross-stitching, too! Spring is gorgeous! But I like all of them a lot. :)

This is my current project:

As you can see, it's not technically difficult, although there are several areas of unusual stitches. I have decided to skip the whitework sampler (alphabet) area. Since you simply cannot see it, I can't see myself taking the time to do it! It's bad enough working the background texture (in whitework) around the large shamrock. I do want to do the Mountmellick stitching area, though. Other unusual stitches have included an eye stitch, satin stitch, and an open double buttonhole stitch (which I haven't done yet).

That is really lovely, Lali. I especially like the shades of green, and the contrasting white eye stitch. I've just been to Dublin, so your sampler was rather pertinent!!

I must admit that I've slowed down on my stitching over the last few years - first of all with moving house there was just too much else to do, then I found I needed to have glasses for close-up work -which of course explains why I had been struggling with my stitching for a while, anyway! Now I find I'm spending too much time on these Tolkien forums... :D

You know, they do have a tendency to take time away from other stuff. :blackeye:

I've been working on this project for several years now. Why? It's not that difficult or involved; it's just that I get busy or get out of the mood.

Anyway, I was going to say that I loved the beadwork you're doing in those. I see it in the Cinderella one for sure (I think!), and I thought I saw it on another one, too. ?? Or are they French knots?

Most definitely beads :)

The Cinderella design also call for some crystal "treasures" in her headdress and décolleté, which I will add in last of all.

No, I haven't. After a visit to Norway I got inspired and thought about trying some drawn thread work (Hardanger), but have never got around to that, either. :(

These came out of the kiln this week. Three bonsai pots and a small figure.

Ahh, to be women of leisure, sitting around in a castle tower somewhere with nothing better to do than embroidery and other such handiwork. ;)

(Oh, it is a lonely life -- bathing, dressing, undressing, making exciting underwear....) :D

Love, love, love the bonsai pots! Especially the tall one! Would you ever consider making and selling one like that?

Oooh, Tosh, you sneaked in on me there. Lovely work! The pots are especially pretty. (The figure is quite good, too.)

The tall one is for a cascade tree; the sort that tumbles down from a cliff-face so I put a mountain themed haiku on each face, one for each season. One is by an 18th century Japanese poet, the other three I wrote myself.
The further small bonsai had its glaze run too far and it lost part of a foot. I do a figure from time to time when I get bored with making pots. I have to wait until I can think of an interesting posture (and one that is self-supporting)

Eru, my pots aren't that good, they definitely look like amateur work. There are professional bonsai potters in the UK and they are very good. One lives in Norfolk and attends my club. He takes his pots to Europe to sell. What making my own allows me to do is to produce quirky stuff.
