Some people believe that you have to be able to draw a credible nude before you can draw a decent person with clothes on.

I wish I could draw. Is this a skill that can be learned by anybody? I have a whole bunch of amazing pictures in my head, but at the moment it looks like they're going to stay there. :(

Based on my own experience, I believe anyone willing to put in the patience and practice to learn can do so.

Hmmm, yes, but I would exclude the "naughty bits." Leave some mystery, I guess.

But it is very important to understand the human form in order to draw a person properly.

Jude, unless you have some sort of motor impairment or learning disability (which you've never indicated), I think you can learn. I do think there is an inherent talent, however, that only some people are blessed to have. IOW, you can improve, for sure, but you can only go so far if you're not gifted.

I am a decent drawer; I'm not gifted. I just barely qualify as slightly talented. Katie, otoh, is already better than I was at her age. I think she's probably better than my mom.

I think it's not that different from learning an instrument - some people will have a natural talent at it but everyone has to practice at it to get good, an almost anyone who practices enough can learn how to play a few tunes well. :)

I really couldn't draw at all. Not at all. But I went to classes when I retired and eventually did a few things that don't embarrass me. One can learn technique and observation. It's the observation that's important. Daily practice is necessary but I'm afraid I don't do it. I'm not serious enough clearly.
I have had a handful of sessions of drawing from life. The thing is you can't offend a vase of flowers by a poor rendition. :blackeye: The body is a really difficult subject to capture with its foreshortening and hollows and bulges. I deliberately tried the 5 and 10 minute exercises to get the essence quickly but I can't say I was ever any good. I have more success with clay nudes. One can take more time with those. But then I don't use models for those, other than my own.
As for the naughty bits, I was always annoyed as a child by the dishonest Victorian habit of hiding them or pretending the body has no hair. if I do a figure I attempt to portray it honestly, even if I may fail at it.

I *can* draw, but have no inclination towards it unless there's some tangible benefit to me for the effort. I mean... if I have an idea about something I'd like to build around the house, and there's no way I can describe what I'm thinking about adequately- I can draw well enough that I can get the idea across. And make it look like a *good* idea. :D

Other than that, I don't have any pictures in my head that need expressing. I can look at a photo and make an adequate drawing of the scene or the animal- but why bother when the photo looks so much better? I'm not trying to belittle the art of drawing- just trying to explain how I think about it. I'm kinda mercenary, I guess. I want something for my effort besides something to look at.

I guess that isn't true, really. I am making a tile mosaic mural on the wall of a shower in our house that is much more ornamental than practical. The medium is different, that's all.

Okay, what do you all think of this?

Even if you have never drawn before this course is for you. Discover the joy of drawing. These lessons are designed to spark a latenet talent or enhance a budding interest. We will explore proportion, perspective, faces, composition and more, in a relaxed and positive atmosphere. By the end of this course you will be drawing recognizable portraits of friends and family.
Whaddya think? Is it realistic and acheivable? It's an eight-week course.

Yes and yes. :)
And like most such things, how much you get out of it will depend on how much you put into it.

I honestly think if I hadn't taken art classes in high school I wouldn't be able to draw nearly as well, if at all. One of the biggest parts is just looking at things differently so that you're better able to draw them. So, if you think you'd enjoy it, why not? :)

Yah. The miniscule amount of exposure I have had with art has led me to "see" things in another light, or color or perspective than I previously did. If nothing else, you are exposed to things in a different way and are able to view them in a different light.

Rebecca has it down. What she says is true.

The same drive home seemed to suddenly change for me when I was able to see it with "different" eyes.

I needed something simple to do after my crazy detail-intensive last drawing. So here's a pretty bird.

Just regular pencil for the bird and a blue colored pencil for the sky.
