Silwen, I like your painting. It took me a moment before I saw the figure. At first it just looked abstract to me. Where do you have this hanging? I really like the tall and narrow format. Those really look great hanging in a room. You also mentioned writing. Do you have any of your writings posted here or on TORC?

Tosh, that sculpture is great! I saw it in another thread before I came over here and I thought (I kid you not) that is a was a piece of fine art that you found a picture of on the internet. Your figure caught my eye because of her pose. Most nudes are in basic standing or sitting poses, but this lady is actually doing something. So tell me, what did she step on? ;) I've never been good at sculpture personally (I even took a sculpting class in school, because I thought it was the art I needed the most help learning), but I have found some pleasure in molding small objects (such as food, toys, books, and toothbrushes) for my daughters dollhouse from FIMO. Your figure is a lot more accomplished though.

Thanks, Sidonzo. I've only ever made about 6 figures and that one isn't one of the better ones. I don't take them seriously but am pleased that they look reasonable. I like a figure to look as if he or she was in the middle of doing something or has a certain mood. I am in the middle of making a Minotaur at the moment for a change. I'll soon be back to bonsai pots though. When I'm fed up with showing Lady with Verruca I'll switch to Lady with PMT.
I made a figure of a man applauding as a Christmas present for a woman friend who is a stand up comic. I told her I would be giving her the clap for Christmas. :D

Tosh, your sculpture is amazing  I'm very impressed! I thought it was a statuette you'd bought/inherited/found in a dusty loft...
It reminds me of this Roman statue:

As for me... I'm ashamed to say that I don't do much creative stuff lately. I don't have the energy. I studied Fine Arts at University in Spain, so I have lots of crappy paintings, half-decent drawings and some cool etchings stashed back home, which I have to go through some time and do a thorough clearance. I utterly sucked at sculpture though.

I still draw from time to time, mostly doodles ( <-- see my avatar). I've half-started many larger projects, comic books and paintings, that I'm quite discouraged that I'll ever finish something. :(

Are you like me then Ber, not a finisher? I like starting things but often have a psychological block about finishing them.
As to the figure, I did have classical postures in mind but didn't copy anything in particular. That figure you called up is better by a factor of ten than what I make. To get better I really need to take lessons and work from the life as I am basically self taught. However hard I try, because I don't work from life the figures tend to be idealised. I would much prefer to get the boniness or flabbiness of real people into my work. I am still stuck in working in a naturalistic manner, not daring yet to move towards a freer style.

ETA I liked your painting Silwen. The richness of the blue and the light catching on her hip and belly have an uplifting effect. The idea of diving into blue water that gets darker and deeper stirs all sorts of thoughts.

Tosh, I thought your sculpture was professionally done as well! Just a picture from the internet that you had liked. :Q If that one's "not one of the better ones," I'd love to see the others!

Berhael, I love the avatar thingy in your sig! I was so amused by it! :D :D Would you mind if I borrowed it to use as an avatar? :)

I, too, have the habit of not finishing things. My sketch books are filled with drawings that I just couldn't be bothered to finish, not quite complete watercolours and the like. One of my problems in my portraiture class was deadlines. Could never finish anything. (On time, that is. I eventually had to finish everything.)

Oo, thanks! :D Forgot to add, I'd been wondering if you had drawn your avatar. It's really good! Is that a self portrait?

Thanks  Yes, it's supposed to be me. :) Here's a pic of me, holding a friend's baby (notice the look of panic in his face :D), so you can check the verisimilitude. ;)

Tosh, your sculpture also reminded me of some paintings of nudes in the bath - forgot who made those, though, and am too lazy to look it up now.

Berhael, I recently saw a picture of you somewhere and realised I saw you soemwhere before - in your avatar! I really like teh drawing because it is a skilled one with very sure lines.

Sidonzo, i had planned an abstract painting for the format, but decided against it. I think I've never done abstract painting, ever, though I do like it. I have no place to hang the painting though. My place is too small and crammed as it is. It's leaning against my bookshelf right now. The lack of space, however, isn't keeping me from starting a new painting today. It will also be a nude, probably - somehow I specialised on them during my studies (in Literature and Art). As to my writing: I haven't published anything on TORC, but I was a semi-finalist with three poems on www.poetry.com. If oyu search for my name "Nadia Majid", you will get a list of the poems. I also published a story once, but the site it was displayed on is no longer online.

A talented bunch of people :D .. not that I can hold much water with any of you lol. I 'dabble' a lot.. at a lot of things. I think overall the most proud of my creations I am or rather was in having build myself a brick dome with 12 arched windows, then designed and made stained glass windows for them although it was the carpenter who had to do the frames. That was one heck of an experience... and with a view 2 storeys above ground level.

I knit, I sew... but not very well and one day I want to try my hand at some celtic knotwork. That's just gorgeous though I fear I won't have the patience

You have some pictures of that? It sounds pretty awesome!

I would have to go digging in a major way. That was a long time ago. On the other hand there might be some pics on the net of that house (that now belongs to someone else). It was photographed repeatedly as 'tourist promotion' LOL I'll go and scour and see if I can dig up something :)

ah! Look what one finds when one looks. Mind you... it doesn't show you much and I will have to go dig in my old photos. But that's the house

Alandriel, that's certainly not "dabbling"! I am speechless.

You know what the really 'great/crazy' thing was? LOL
Those 12 windows where above an octagonal room and oriented according to the compass points and were designed according to the zodiac. At the time people thought I was nutts.. but once it stood, I had to fend off people from climbing up to have a better look or trying to get into the house.
It was rather funny actually. Knock, knock. Oh hello. Can we please come in and take some pics of your house? After about the 10th time I ended up instigating an 'opening' hour. Now the place has been turned into a diving operation and that's actually quite nice. Lots of people get to enjoy it

And now I'll shut up and go looking for old prints

Silwen, thanks
Do you means the pictures of women bathing by Toulouse-Lautrec and (I think) Degas? It's what I thought when you mentioned them. :)

Alandriel... wow :Q Now THAT's a major project!

Degas, it was, yes. I also saw a drawing by Füssli that looks exactly the same as Tosh's sculpture except for the seat.

You built that thing yourself!? You can't possibly mean you put that thing together brick by brick by hand, do you? Even if you "just" designed it, that's an impressive feat! Are you an architect or something along those lines?

Füssli (or Fuseli as I know him) is teh kewl! :D Very very weird (and a misogynistic twit), but wonderful. I love some of his paintings, and have seen some drawings by him that wouldn't be out of place in a porn website. :Q
