Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."
A few people have expressed interest in this thread being started so here it is.
I ran across this in a thread at TORC quite a while ago, but didn't really get into until about a week ago. To me, this is a motivational tool to get out and exercize and a fun way to keep track of how far you've travelled.
You can use any means to achieve this goal: walking, hiking, jogging, swimming, rollerblading, or biking. It's easy to record your distance if you're using a treadmill or a bike machine, but if you're walking outside you can use a pedometer or estimate your distance at 1 mile for every 20 minutes of brisk walking on a flat surface (I can do a mile in 18 minutes so a pedometer would be good so you don't short yourself!).
It's 458 MILES from Hobbiton to Rivendell! From the Walk to Rivendell site:
Here is the first milage chart for Hobbiton to Rivendell. The hobbits had quite a fast pace as you can see! It only took them 27 days to do the 458 miles! (At my pace, I've calculated it could take me a year so I'm hoping to be able to push my mileage up weekly.)
Quote: Just because Frodo walked 18 miles the first night, doesn't mean you have to! Hobbits, as we all know, are made of tougher stuff than men (and even women!). Most of us have to work or go to school or raise our children, and that means we can't recreate the journey day by day (of course, maybe someday you will, when you can afford to take a monthlong holiday). The important thing about this quest is your commitment to see it through to the end. Choose a time frame that is realistic, and stick to it! Our rules are very flexible. We want everyone to create a challenge that will work for their lifestyles.
Our reference book is The Atlas of Middle-Earth- Karen W. Fonstad. Page 157 gives the date, hours traveled, mileage, where they ended, and even mph!!
So anybody join in if they wish. It doesn't matter if you're already fit and have probably been to Mordor and back or are just starting up a fitness routine!

Right now, I'm just at 12.62 miles which means I've just had a frugal supper and am heading towards Stock Road.
