"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

A few people have expressed interest in this thread being started so here it is. :)

I ran across this in a thread at TORC quite a while ago, but didn't really get into until about a week ago. To me, this is a motivational tool to get out and exercize and a fun way to keep track of how far you've travelled.

You can use any means to achieve this goal: walking, hiking, jogging, swimming, rollerblading, or biking. It's easy to record your distance if you're using a treadmill or a bike machine, but if you're walking outside you can use a pedometer or estimate your distance at 1 mile for every 20 minutes of brisk walking on a flat surface (I can do a mile in 18 minutes so a pedometer would be good so you don't short yourself!).

It's 458 MILES from Hobbiton to Rivendell! From the Walk to Rivendell site:
Quote:
Just because Frodo walked 18 miles the first night, doesn't mean you have to! Hobbits, as we all know, are made of tougher stuff than men (and even women!). Most of us have to work or go to school or raise our children, and that means we can't recreate the journey day by day (of course, maybe someday you will, when you can afford to take a monthlong holiday). The important thing about this quest is your commitment to see it through to the end. Choose a time frame that is realistic, and stick to it! Our rules are very flexible. We want everyone to create a challenge that will work for their lifestyles.

Our reference book is The Atlas of Middle-Earth- Karen W. Fonstad. Page 157 gives the date, hours traveled, mileage, where they ended, and even mph!!
Here is the first milage chart for Hobbiton to Rivendell. The hobbits had quite a fast pace as you can see! :Q It only took them 27 days to do the 458 miles! (At my pace, I've calculated it could take me a year so I'm hoping to be able to push my mileage up weekly.)

So anybody join in if they wish. It doesn't matter if you're already fit and have probably been to Mordor and back or are just starting up a fitness routine!

Me, too. Holby and Sass make me feel awfully guilty—I have been fit in the past, running in fact, so I know they're right. . . .

I was so happy when you said you were going to do this, Eru, because I need a reason to walk, and a goal. Thanks!

I'm in!

I'm also going to get a pedometer - with my health plan, walking a minumum of 5000 steps a day means you get rewarded with points that can be converted into Voyager Miles .. which makes it easier for me to fly to visit the Faramonster! All the motivation I need :D

That, and walking to Rivendell :D

Count me in also Eru. I'll be jogging to Rivendell as I find walking doen't get my heart rate up. I go for a jog at lunchtimes when I can, for about 20 mins. I have no idea how long the circuit I run is though. I think it's about a mile and a half, maybe 2 miles. I'll check it out!

Can we also combine general weight loss support in this thread? I'm currently at 17St and working to lose at least 2St. (That's 28lbs or about 12 Kilos). I'll be posting my progress here just as an incentive!

Cheers,
Alatar

I could need some support for weight loss too.... and I will willingly supply low calory recepies, just tell me what you like.

Do cycling miles count? I got a home trainer for my birthday... and a bit of cycling in the evening when the orcs sleep is so much easier to realise than a long walk.

I join, if you don't mind. I used to walk some three kilometers every day; next week, on my last day in office, I plan to walk back home (25 miles).

I'm definitely in, but I'll be a little behind the pack. The rest of this week is going to be way too busy because I'm going on vacation for a week starting Saturday. I'll keep track of my walking on the beach, though, so I'll have something to report when I'm back!

Thank you for doing this, Eru. I've always wanted to walk to Rivendell! Once we're there, can we rest a bit by the fire and hear some elven tales?

7.5 miles since Wednesday!

I try for sanity's sake to walk an hour a day, up hill and down dale. During the week I manage better than on the weekend, when family responsibilities loom large.

[crawls in the door...]

I'm interested, but my participation will have to wait a bit. I picked up a horrible bug while I was in England, and am now on my third day of a liquid diet. Last night, I was still running a fever, though I did manage to make it once around the block with the pooch. Neither of us were moving very fast, though (she's 14, and arthritic.)

Bleahhh....and it's hayfever season too, which severely limits my aerobic endurance....

Well, in High School, we used to have the 100 Mile Club, and I think I recall seeing a male student who'd injured himself doing other, more dangerous sports, doing laps around the school track....on crutches!! So, where there's a will there's a way! :)

Sunsilver, you can hang in the back with me! Those hasty fellows in the front can lure the Nazgul away so we can slip through without incident.

I'd like to join in, but I tried once before and didn't have the motivation... to work out how far I'd walked. Does anybody know if I could join using my pedometer to convert steps to miles? I'd really like to do this but I just wouldn't know where to start. :(

Pips, the easiest approach might be to assume 20 minutes of walking is a mile. Then all you have to do is keep track of your time.

Pips, for heaven's sake! Then just count your paces and call 1500 a mile. Or do they teach young people in these degenerate days to count that high? :P

(Get a watch!)

Whoo Hoo!

Can I echo Teremia and add that walking uphill has the added bonus of using more calories AND toning those-hard-to-reach hamstrings, calves and glutes.

Kudos to you all. You wont regret a single step.

:cheerleader:

Heh! I make Prim feel guilty ...
I'm so proud.

You have to ride a bike that would not be out of place in Middle-earth. :D

Really, I think it's ok. No Harley-Davidsons, though.
