Mossy, it was a book, but it's also been turned into a radio broadcast and numerous films. The album I'm listening to, I don't believe was ever a stage musical, but it is a rock opera, so there's lots of narration and performances, both speaking and singing.

It really is fantastic. There are some wonky pieces of the score, but it fits in perfectly with the aliens. With all the electric guitars and synthesizer beats, it really is something to blare on the speakers and picture in your mind! Also, the CD booklet includes some breath-taking illustrations. War of the Worlds is quite an experience.

Brand New. One of the few newer "punk" bands I actually like.

Well I know that. :P That's why I thought it was strange. ;)

Cool! I didn't know that. It sounds quite interesting. But I do quite like most rock operas, so an SF rock opera should be right up my alley. I'll have to look for that. Thanks, *E*. :)

I didn't mean to sound condescending, I just took your post to mean that you thought the current action-oriented summer blockbuster film was based on a musical, and how odd that seemed. I was just pointing out that it was a book first.

Well there you go!

I know that Jeff Wayne is currently working on a CGI movie of the album, based on the illustrations in the booklet. It should be out in 2007, so I'm really looking forward to that. I wonder who (or if) they'll get to perform the voicework. The album features Richard Burton as the narrator, and Justin Hayward (lead singer of the Moody Blues) in a few songs. Classy stuff!

Until you get a copy of the album, here's a MIDI file of "The Eve of War", which is the first song. :cheers

That's okay! I know you didn't mean to be condescending. :) There ARE people out there who would need that explained. Thankfully, however, I'm not one of them. ;)

Didn't work. I suppose I'll have to dig up some money for the album. ;)

aaand for the sake of On Topicness, I'm listening to Defying Gravity from Wicked. One of my favourite songs ever. :D

Sting: Fields of Gold.

Is the radio only playing sad music today, or do I just take each song that way now?

Fras, the Eva Cassidy one makes me cry ever since it was used on a cancer research advert. Same goes for a lot of people actually. We used it as a backing for a not-very-good piece of drama we'd written, to give the dialogue the illusion of being moving. :P

The Kinks: Waterloo Sunset.

Friend recently let me borrow PJ Harvey's "To Bring you my love". High badass quotient. That girl knows how to rock.

Right now: The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me"

Before that: Tom Waits' "Grapefruit Moon"

Before that: Yo-Yo Ma playing Bach

Next? whatever seems right for the moment...
