Anyone else have the obsession of spending time out of doors in a tent on some remote mountainside who knows where away from civilization: cars, mini-malls, and TV?

If you are indeed a full-grown mountaineer, you are most welcome, and I bow humbly before your superior courage, and/or wrecklessness, and/or psychological perversion.

Me! Me!

My (now ex-)wife and I spent four days out in the Apalachiacola National Forest. It was our EXCEPTIONALLY bad luck to go hiking the day BEFORE the worst cold snap to hit NW Florida in a very long time, so the morning after we had set up camp the temp dropped well below freezing and our campfire had gone out. I tell you what, I was glad the sleeping bag we were using was one of my old Alaskan sleeping bags. I had a hell of a time with that fire and cooking and all. Turned out to be a nice trip anyway, though.

Of course, we seemed to have a lot of bad luck on our trips. Before we were married we spent a weekend in Atlanta. This would not have been so bad if that had not also been the weekend of the last days of Freaknik.

Cool story, fixer. :P

Freak weather....gotta love it.

You've been to Alaska??

I've only backpacked in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.....but I've done it alot there. 3 nights has been the most I've spent out there at one time. It's usually 2 night/3day trips as the work/school schedule allows...though i've only been once in the past 2 years. I'm planning a trip for november....2nights 3days solo, on thanksgiving break.

I'd like to spend a couple of weeks out there.

*raises hand* Mt Rainier was beautiful this year even though the weather was a bit off and I couldn't see the damm thing. Overall the weather was good.

So you can actually go hiking in November and not be buried in a three foot blizzard! Cool!

Best highcountry trip... nine days mostly alone in Alpine Lakes Wilderness!! Woo Hoo.. to be able to do that again!

Hey, Snowdog!:D Long time no see.

Mt. Rainier sounds like fun...much more of an adventure than the Smokies. Yeah, in November there is very little snow in the Smokes.

Welcome to the board, Snow. :cheers

*facepalm*

Alaska is bigger than any other state and is the size of many of the smallest states put together. Despite its low population, not everyone knows each other. I probably knew about two dozen people TOPS when I lived there 24 years ago.

So, no, I don't know who s/he is. :damnfunny

lol.....no, Chris McCandless doesn't live there. HE's not living on this plane of existence anymore. A book was written about him...he starved to death in the backcountry up there...just wondering if y ou've read the book, by Jon Krakaur: Into the Wild.

Good to see you to Lego! Hope thing are going well with you.

I actually was east of Mt Rainier, in smaller mountains of around 9 to 10 thousand feet.

I would like to get up to Alaska someday!

9 or 10 thousand feet......I'd like to climb those. The Smoky mountains are only 5 to 6 thousand. But they're much older. ;) Alot of ancient vibes are there....

"This forest is old...very old." :D

I'd like to go back there for a trek sometime.

Our mountains are new and still growing. Lady St. Helens is quiet this moment, but a few days ago she blew a steam cloud and destroyed another bunch of siesmic equipment the USGS keeps setting up in the crater.

I hope to hike up the White River valley with my son in August.
Its where the great Red Cedar ents live.

I like hiking, but don't usually get anything heavy duty here in Indiana. Splunking is becoming a bit popular around here though... was thinking about trying it.

My brother lives in WA & I'm visiting him in a few weeks. Looking forward to spending some time up in the mountains! :D

One day when I own my string of pack llamas I'll go on some more serious hikes... til then I'll just listen to you macho guys brag about your quests! ;)

cemthinae, if you go to Mt Rainier, tell them you want to go to Sunrise, for its much more pleasent than Paradise if only by the fact its less crowded.

Alright.. all this talk of getting out into the backcountry, and with an opportune weeked coming with good weather.... I'm going!
Now to get all the pack stuff organized in a day.
Pack extra batteries for the digicam too....
Now for the maps and figure out where to go...

Looks like when we go to WA we're going to be camping out a few nights... if only so that my brother & his wife can... be alone.

I'm excited about it though! :D I think we'll probably be camping in Olympic National because my brother lives right outside of it. In anycase I'm definetely planning on getting some hiking in now! Even if I have to leave my best friend behind... *guilty smile*

Snow's feeling the urge. :D Deciding where to go, resolving to actually go, and packing are the stages when backcountry trips are in most danger of failure. :P I hope you get out, Snow.
And a digicam....that's an interesting idea. I may have to see about buying one before November rolls around.

Cemthinae - Sounds like a good opportunity. :) btw...what mtn is that avatar???

*excuse me cemthinae*

That, my friend, is Mt Rainier as seen from the Seattle area. The little (11,000+ feet) peak to the left is Mt Tahoma.

Yeah, I determined to go... White River is looking good right now, but I may take a bootleg hike to Cape Alava (supposed to have reservations).

You are right in the time window of failure there.. too many hikes have been aborted.

I was looking for some of my Mt Rainier pics and found this nice pic of Mt St Helens in the sunrise. Love the mushroom caps!
