I imagine this will be the shortest-lived thread on the boards but I said I'd start it anyway. Unfortunately, Ireland did not qualify from our group on Wednesday so we won'y be taking part in the World Cup in Germany. England will be there, and Germany obviously.

Have we any fans on the board who'll be following their country to glory or ignominy?

I'll be following England (naturally :D ) as best I can here in this godforsaken cultural wasteland known as Los Angeles.

Stupid question: Does David Beckham get to play for England?

I don't think there is any way that Ericsson wouldn't have Beckham in every game. Sure Ericsson is the target of much doubt right now but he wouldn't do something that stupid.

I'm rooting for England as usual. If Germany steps it up a bit they could be serious contenders for the cup this year.

I'm placing my money on Europe this year. I don't think Brazil or Argentina will win this time 'round.

Me, me! :D

Well, Norway's come in as second in Italy's group (with Italy winning), and now we're going to play-off. We're meeting the Czech Republic. I doubt we'll beat them, but who knows? We've surprised people before.

(Three words: Brazil. WC. 1998. )

Big fan with fan orcs at home (I bought them a Nedved shirt in Prague.... ;) ).

Switzerland still has to play against Turkey :(. I'm worried. If not, I can still cheer for the Germans, or for the French.

Oh, and on the 12th of novembre in Geneva is a friendly match, England vs Argentina. Still hesitating to go there, because the tickets are beyond good and evil and it's the evening Switzerland will play its qualification.

Not a big fan of Beckham, though. Give me rather Nedved or Zidane for the game and the Swedish team for the eye and I'm a happy woman.

The world-cup is in 2006 in Germany. :D W00t!!!!!!

And here you see the reason why in 2022, Switzerland will win the world cup.

Who finds my orcs in the group?

The one who guesses right where my orcs are gets football shaped Swiss chocolate for the World Cup matches!!!

You are wrong - to make things easier, they are not together....

I am a Beckham fan, but on the other hand I love the Brazilians. I love to watch them play. In a perfect world, Becks would have been born in Brazil.

I also secretly like the Italians, although I would never say so. :D

I am also a HUGE fan of the LUYSA U-11 and U-9 teams known as The Thunder and The Outlaws. I see these guys play every Saturday and love every minute. Of course, the fact that my little boys play on these teams has something to do with it.............

So many kids in North America play Soccer! But the game just doesn't seem to "catch on" as it should. I can't understand it, myself. I have never managed to watch a whole game of what the Americans call "football", it is the most pointless waste of time I've ever seen. I am a big baseball fan, though, and like most Canadians, born with a love of Hockey. Maybe when the kids who play soccer now are grown up they will want a bigger professional league. I hope so.

Vison, the fact that I am a fan of the FC Onex juniors might have something to do with their players...

And a member of the German team (Jens Lehman, the second goal-keeper) went to school with me. This is probably the last big event of his career.

Tonight in the Champions league the very little Swiss club Thun plays!!! They have a budget of only six million Euros per year! Not for one player, but for the whole team. I'll cheer for them!!!!!

Stay home and watch the Switzerland match!

Though I'm not sure a match between England and Argentina will ever qualify for the title 'friendly' :D

Right you are, Melly....

I also must say that the perspective of an evening a football stadion half-full with English fans in the freeking cold novembre of Geneva and with two little orcs (if we go, they go) does not enchant me.... but on the other hand: how often will I have an occassion like this??

Sorry for Thun yesterday :(.

It was an away match, wasn't it? There's still three matches to go in the group, we'll just have to hope. :)

I watched the first half of Liverpool v. Anderlecht (my dad and I are both big liverpool fans) and it was quite entertaining...I missed the second half because it was 1:30 am and we all needed to get up early. 1-0, not a bad result, but I think we could have scored a lot more than that. *growl*

If the orcs have to go, then NO, England - Argentina doesn't seem like a good idea. A nice warm house, good dinner, the swiss match on TV and some wine - now that sounds good.

Can we talk Premier League football as well.

I support Manchester United for my sins. And enjoying the Roy Keane debate because I'd love to know what really happened......there are arguments for both sides.

Australia defeated Uruguay last Wednesday night, which means...

Germany here we come!!!

:cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader:

One hour’s extra time, and then it went to a penalty shoot out. The atmosphere was electric! And this is the first time we've qualified since 1974!

I’m looking forward to 2022 myself, Nin. Maybe we’ll qualify again, and
my little soccer star will play yours!

Most football coverage here is on pay tv, and generally quite late at night. We try to watch what we can of the Premier League games, and we always watch the finals. :)
