This makes me nervous. They seem to be disregarding established lore in a significant way.

They're also angrily attacking the fans who defend the lore, which is never a good sign.

From what I've seen the writing doesn't quite measure up. Then there's the "controversial" bits. Apparently Middle Earth isn't isn't diverse enough, and Harfoots are a part of the story. Warrior Galadriel, beardless dwarf queen, etc. Dwarf women have beards, Aragorn said so.

It seems rather Anvilicious to me.

Anvilicious
Quote:
A portmanteau of anvil and delicious (or for those who are more etymologically inclined, a combination of "anvil" and "licious," which is ultimately derived from Latin meaning "luring," so it could be interpreted as anvil-luring; "delicious" by the way is ultimately from the Latin meaning "luring from"), anvilicious describes a writer's and/or director's use of an artistic element, be it line of dialogue, visual motif or plot point, to so unsubtly convey a particular message that they may as well etch it onto an anvil and drop it on your head. The term anvilicious thus qualifies as Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness.

Heavy-handed for the new millennium. Extreme polar opposite of subtle.

I am cautiously optimistic. Everything I've seen suggests that they are doing their best with this. The angry gatekeeper "Fans" are actually making me want to watch it more cause they are mostly spewing hate filled rhetoric about "wokeness" and holding PJ's LotR up as the perfect example of purism.

   How can anyone say that PJ's version was purism? With any degree of sincerity, I mean.

Perhaps even with all its impurities, PJ's version is pure compared to this.

I really hope I'm wrong but the trailers so far have looked really bad to me. The purist stuff doesn't bother me, but visually it looks like an big, ugly CGI fest, and the tone looks far more "thousandth generic Tolkien fantasy knock off" than it does Tolkien. IMO!

Weird. To me it looks so much better than the Hobbit. Back to practical effects primarily.

Aesthetic wise, I'd love to see something inspired by Tolkien's own artwork, lie that below. Even though for the most part, I like PJ's visual style, which seems to be the inspiration for this show as well.

Read the comment section on the latest trailer - it is probably not what Amazon was hoping for lol

The trolling online is insane but it seems to be a very vocal minority, even a campaign. You start to see the same comments popping up on everything released.

Legitimate reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Including one from Neil Gaiman, whose opinion I trust a lot more that the average YouTube commentator :)

Really, really fun. I remember buying the Silmarillion as a schoolboy when it was published and it very much not being the prequel I was hoping for. This is the sort of thing I wanted to experience back then. I'll watch the whole series when it drops, with enthusiasm.
Of course, now the knuckle-draggers are claiming that all positive reviews were paid for and Neil Gaiman can't be trusted cause he has a show on Amazon. Honestly, its kinda pathetic.

Not full reviews, just reviewer reactions.

Gaiman also has a show on Netflix, which he is vigorously promoting to ensure a second season. And American Gods was on Starz, IIRC. And a few other projects. Gaiman is the Cumberbatch of writers, he's everywhere.

Point is, if anything, he's not invested in promoting a series that might distract viewers away from Sandman.

YouTube comments are a place I go not. *shudders delicately*.

PS Gaiman's comments were based on the first two episodes, not just the trailer.

The comments yov is referring to (I think) are not the standard youtube trolling ;)

I started out lukewarm towards the whole project, but now that I've seen some previews and trailers, I'm actually getting excited.

Have watched the trailers etc but they haven't grabbed me...very disjointed in the way clips are spliced together, and likely not representative of how the scenes will actually play out. Have listened to some of the music and enjoyed parts. I don't have Prime so will probably wait until my son is home in October and binge watch then on his account, if it has had good reviews!

I'm really surprised that the show premieres in just a couple days but there are still no official reviews out. Usually at this point they'll have given reviewers access to at least an episode or two. Seems strange to me that that hasn't happened here.

Eh? There's a review out in literally every publication you care to name.

They went up a couple hours after I made my post. Clearly a plan to make me look stupid.

Metacritic has it at 71 right now which is pretty middling, but there's a huge range of "it's fantastic" to " it's not good". Sounds like they only got the first 2 episodes so it could certainly get better, but I doubt Amazon is happy with that reaction to start.

I just scanned the headlines from various mainstream publications, which is as much effort I'm prepared to expend on reviews. The consensus is that it is beautiful visually, but there is a difference of opinion on how good the story is.
