I've signed up at two chess sites, one speed chess and one "correspondence" or "lemme think about that I'll get back to you within 3 days" site.

The quickie site, http://www.uchess.com/index.php requires you to finish the game with less than a certain amount of minutes on your clock. I won my first game, with about a minute to spare, but the second game I lost because (darn!) I got a phone call. There is no stopping the clock. Maybe I shouldn't play at work.

The slow site, http://www.redhotpawn.com , allows non-subscribers to have up to 6 games going at once. While waiting around for responses, I checked out the forums, which were a kick. You know all the sterotypes about geeky antisocial boys in chess clubs? (Not that I'm geeky or antisocial, OK, maybe a little, but I used to run a chess club at a middle school.) Well, that's what I found in the forums. One person would post a fairly lame riddle in the puzzle forum, and then be torn into by three pages posts of why it was a lame puzzle, how low various members of the thread's EQs (like Iq, but emotional quotient) were, pointing out spelling errors, and various other disparaging remarks. Talk about osgilliations! It was sort of entertaining. I've wasted far too much time there as a lurker. I'm not sure though, that my life is enriched. :D

I'm narya on both sites, by the way. I didn't want to have an obviously female name there.
