Well, since the final scenes of the book have been moved to film 2, I imagine "Northern Lights" would not have worked as a title anyway!

WHAT?! :rage: Are you sure?

But that is a perfect, perfect ending! How is supposed to end now?

Edain, the 1st book is published under the title "the Golden Compass" in North America... I dont mind that the movie is called that. But nowhere in the book does a character refer to the Alethiometer as "the golden compass"... and they have the Master doing it in the trailer... sigh... ah well.

Alatar I just heard about that. Makes me very mad. I agree with Sharky, the book ending is perfect... and gives a nice lead-in into the second book/film (crossing the bridge, going into a new world)... I heard some comments that they did it because they thought the ending was too dark and would turn people off the next movie... Its the logical conclusion of the main plot arc of the first novel... In my opinion it wont really make sense and will significantly weaken the movie to have it end before that scene... Hollywood and its stoopfid love of cliffhangers. UGH.

Besides, "The Golden Compass" makes a lot more sense than "Sorcerers Stone" ever did.
Agreed. And just for the record, that didn't happen in all North America. Here in Canada both film and book retained the title 'Philosopher's Stone'.

Really? Did they redub the lines too or just change the title?

The characters always referred to the "Philosopher's Stone". I guess they redubbed the lines for the U.S. version.

I think they shot the relevant scenes twice.

Agreed. Of all things to change in movies though, I still fail to comprehend how Philosopher to Sorcerer makes any bit of sense.

Looks good, enchie.

Bit of trivia I noted; in the 6 hour stage production a couple of years ago, Lord Asriel was played by... Timothy Dalton.

I don't care if he was played by Asriel himself, it was still a godawful production. :rage:

bit of a stinker according to the Sunday times

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/ ... 956068.ece

btw just read this thread -liked Alatars idea of showing it as a bit more of a modern Oxford, it would have been great to show Cornmarket street with the Chav's then a pan down to Queen street where all the itnerants gather.

Better still with Odorama - the smell of piss and Macdonalds which is so much Oxford once you leave the enlcave of the ivory towers

Saw it tonight. I actually liked it, I thought it was quite good. Not jumping through the roof or anything - but yeah. :)

BUT! I would really like to smack the idiot that decided to leave out the book ending. It is perfect in the book. It would have been perfect in the movie. *Grumble*

Anyway, Lee Scoresby was great, and that is of course the only thing that matters. :blackeye:

Haven't read the book, but although the special effects were fantastic, and the acting excellent, the direction was flat - the same feeling as watching a Harry Potter number.

The fight between the two bears is jaw-dropping.

;) Indeed, Lidless!!!

The reviews are not good here. On the other hand, the other Nicole Kidman movie is getting raves: Margot at Dinner or something. Reading about it, I get an Ingmar Bergmann feel, but that's neither here nor there.

"Atonement" is getting good reviews. Saw the trailer and *yawned* but maybe it's worth a go.

The kids want to see The Golden Compass, so maybe next weekend. If it's still around.

I saw it. It was good, up to a point.

The end irritated me no fecking end I went to see it with someone who hasn't read the books, and she was like "What IS dust?". So I basically told her the story.

Bolvangar and Svalbard are in the wrong order, the way the alethiometer was done was just annoying, the bear fight was indeed jaw dropping, but mostly it was just boring. I won't be renting it, that's for sure.
