:nono:
It's called Northern Lights.

It's nothing like a compass.

Witches can't just fly like that, the need a piece of Cloud Pine.

Hmmm...

The book is called Golden Compass in the US, so therefore the film is too. Nothing remarkable there, they did the same with Philosophers Stone.

Regarding the witches, I suspect she is holding the cloud pine in her hand. Perhaps it doubles as a bow?

My real problem with the trailer is that it looks too fantastical. The beauty of His Dark Materials was that it felt like our world, just shifted out of phaze a little. However, I'm not a purist, I'll go watch the film and probably enjoy it in its own right. I just wish more people had paid attention when PJ was talking about the trick to fantasy being to make it feel real.

I have not read the book but the trailer looked pretty cool to me. I don't see anything in it that would be more fantastical than LOTR? I don't think it's possible to really tell from a trailer. A lot of the realness comes from the acting and other factors you can't really judge yet.

Phew, there was a daemon in there. I was about to plan on boycotting this already until the tail end of the trailer there. I just couldnt imagine seeing a His Dark Materials without daemon in it. I also agree with you Alatar, too fantastical i thought while watching...."This looks like a bit Harry Potter and a bit The Chronicles of Narnia." But its still The Golden Compass! Woo! I'll see it just for that

But HP and the Philosopher's Stone was called HP and the Sorcere's Stone in the US only - The Golden Compass won't be re-titled Northern Lights in Europe. :(

Having said that, I'm both drooling in anticipation and cursing my luck because it will be out shortly after I give birth, so I doubt I'll be seeing this at the cinema (unless it lasts well until after Christmas when I will be able to find a babysitter).

I know that Ber, and I understand that people get upset by it. Its just that for me, personally, the content and look of the film are far more important than the title. If people had to make concessions to get the book published or film made, I prefer that to not reading/seeing them at all. Its a lesser of two evils. Besides, "The Golden Compass" makes a lot more sense than "Sorcerers Stone" ever did.

OG, I was getting worried at the lack of Daemons also. Even in the shot with Lyra riding Iorek there's no sign of Pantalaimon. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt for now... :P

Hmmm... There is no sign of Daemons until at the very end. I hope they haven't changed their signifigance...

Probably more to do with the timeline Crucifer. The Daemons will be added in post production, most of which will be far from complete 6 months before release. Also, they could be saving Panatalaimon for a big reveal, like PJ did with Gollum.

*Looking SO forward to this*

And as a huge fan of Lee Scoresby, I'm so happy that it looks like he will get the screen time he deserves! And he looks great! Perfect! :D

I am very excited about this movie but I feel like I'm setting myself up for disappointment.

I'll go see it if I can. And then discuss it with the friend of mine who was the one to introduce me to the series.

The alethiometer is NOT a frigging compass! :rage:
But it looks good. :D
What I've seen in the trailer looks too "wow". I expected Oxford to look more like... Oxford, less like Trantor, or Coruscant. But I do like the actors they've chosen (although the girl they picked up to play Lyra doesn't look like my mental image of her, but that never happens...)

He crossed to the desk and took from a drawer a small package wrapped in black velvet. When he unfolded the cloth, Lyra saw something like a large watch or a small clock: a thick disk of gold and crystal. It might have been a compass or something of the sort.

“What is it?” she said.

“It's an alethiometer.
Just sayin'....

But yeah, its too futuristic looking for my taste. I expected something more like modern Oxford, or even slightly older.

As for the actors, the play in the National Theatre had Timothy Dalton as Asriel and Patricia Hodge as Mrs Coulter. I really wish I'd got to see it.

I might sound like a horrible purist, but this kind of thing annoys me, because it's completely unnecessary. Northern Lights was a perfectly good title, magical and evocative, I don't see why they had to change it.

Neither do I, but it doesn't change the book and helps it get published, so I live with it. :)

I saw it. It was terrible. I during the supposedly extremely sad part near the end. :help:
