Aliens was and is one of the best action flicks of all time.

Alien was and is one the best horror flicks of all time.

So it's mostly a matter of taste in genres. But Alien is the superior date movie, especially if you've seen it and she hasn't. :D

I couldn't finish The Gremlins.

And I know that's silly, especially considering I watched Jaws right after that...

Umm...Most 'horror' movies just make me laugh.

The Romantic Comedies are the ones that make me hide. :Q

Alien was super tense which is probably why people think it is boring since Aliens was very action packed. I should revisit Alien since I've only seen it once.

I grew up watching Gremlins so it didn't scare me all that much. There were certain parts that creeped me out which is kind of strange since I was pretty young when it came out so you think I would be traumatized!

Horror movies these days kind of suck. They are usually just slasher flicks. If you want a really good scary movie I suggest The Decent it was excellent.

Aliens is an excellent Vietnam movie in Space.

Alien is an excellent horror movie in Space.

To try to compare the two is pointless.

Alien was suspense, Aliens was action.

I hope I didn't offend  I honestly never saw that big of a difference as far as action vs horror. Now I must watch Alien again!! I know there is tons of action in Aliens because I've seen a gazillion times but I never thought of it as anything but a scary movie.

Game over man! Game over!!! :D

The Others with Nicole Kidman creeped me out. It reminded me tone-wise of the Kubrick The Shining, but felt even more claustrophobic.

Agreed. But I still can't watch it without my snarky comments most of the time.

And I loved The Others. It doesn't creep me out, its just a good movie. My biggest problem with horror movies is I figure out the plot too quickly. I do the same thing with magicians.

The Shining (old one not new TV movie one) is a classic good movie. Hands down one of the best horror flicks ever made, even better with out the editing for TV crapola. It and the Exorist are too favorites. I like the Ring, but I like Reincarnated better. Of course I like the Horrorfest stuff too, some of its funny and some of its good.

I normally hate both the egregious gorefests and the jump-out-and-say-boo varieties of horror movies. What Alien and The Shining and The Others had going for them was suspense and a sense of psychological horror that made the elements I didn't normally like work in a real context.

I don't watch scary movies often but I do remember being thoroughly creeped out my 1st watching of Sixth Sense.

I don't mind gorefests, but I end up making fun of them during the movie, which is why some don't like to watch them with me. Most of Rob Zombies stuff is that type...and I had a good laugh with The Devils Rejects.

I will say out of all the Horrorfest movies some were the suspense psychological horror, at least I thought Reincarnation and The Abandonded were both pretty suspensful, with a touch of gore, but not too much. I really have a hard time with over the top gore and not being snarky.

Does anyone remember Event Horizon? I think I heard somewhere that they actually cut a bunch of scenes because they were far to gruesome. I always look away during the extra scary parts. :Q

OMG! I'm so glad you brought this up. Every time I'm at the video store I go on a tirade about how Event Horizon is in the SciFi section and not the Horror section. That movie scared the crap out of me to the point where I had to watch it in two parts. It was horrifying!!!!!! Excellent example of a movie that makes you turn the lights on and give you nightmares and make watching Jurassic Park a little more difficult.

Al, I've watched all of the Alien movies except for AvP but I'm sure I'll get around to it as I'm a sucker for marathons and since the Aliens are in AvP the marathon wouldn't be complete without it :D.

Jurassic Park scared me the first time, and that's embarrassing to admit because I was in high school at the time. I blame the subsonics. :D

No way would I watch Jaws without a protective shield of stuffed animals and intense light shone into every last corner of the room. I played the soundtrack the other week and screamed every time the main theme came on just thinking about the damn shark.
You know, I actually watched Jaws for the first time last night - and I was really disappointed. No way I could find that scary, and it was... well, not that good a movie. Okay, but nothing more. And not scary. I prefer the book by far, I've actually read and enjoyed it several times.

And in the book, Hooper dies, and it's amazingly written. :blackeye:

The highlight for me was at the beginning of the end credits:

I don't like movies with sharks, don't know why, but the thought alone scares me witless. There's a new one coming up next year Meg (even though, or maybe because, I read the book a lot of years ago), and I hope I'll never bump into any of the trailers either. :help:
Oh great. How many movie-goers will now start to fear that the Carcharodon megalodon is still out there? And how many sharks will have to die for that.

And the shark(s) in the movie had better look better than the one in the MEG picture. :blackeye:

Just to clearify: Human, Great White, Megalodon.

Ew, a Jaws hater. :P

No, the movie itself is not really scary, just the subject, and afterwards when you realize the affect and are uncomfortable to even get in the bathtub.

I just have a love/hate relationship with sharks. Well, it's mostly the great white that scares me because it's the one everybody focuses on, but the basking shark is way up there, despite being toothless. It's the black hole of a mouth I can't stand. Then sand tiger sharks because they look so dumb, like zombie killing machines. And probably makos thanks to Deep Blue Sea. Everything else is just spiffy, though.

I just finished my first Peter Benchley novel (not Jaws) and based on that plus Jaws being one of the few movies generally considered better than it's book counterpart, I won't jump in with high expectations but look forward to reading such a classic.

I definitely got some of their books after seeing the movie. And I love that the shot of the shark tearing the cage apart was real. Some poor thing stuck in it and they kept the camera rolling. Great stuff.

Uh, I mean, IT IS! :D

I don't think it's bad as it was in the 70's. Nothing like Jaws had ever been seen before so it was kind of a frenzy. So many more people these days know the trivia fact about you being more likely to get stung by a bee than bit by a shark.

Most of my favorite shark movies were about megs. :D I can't wait to see the film since the book was supposed to be excellent.

Besides, it's not the meg I'm afraid of... http://youtube.com/watch?v=qEBufNMXtbY He's nawthin'.
