Will Smith is FANTASTIC. The movie is great until about 2/3 of the way through, then it lost me, but it's still a really good movie. I won't go further as I would be bound to put in spoilers.

I want to see this. :) So it's good overall?

Is it scary or suspenseful?

It's hard to say. There are suspensful bits, but for me, the scary bits were overdone? I like it where you don't KNOW what lurks in the dark. And, in usual moviemaking fashion, they overdo it.

I went with Mallory, who loves horror movies, and I don't, so the parts I hated, she liked.

Will Smith is incredible. Without him, it would be a real nose-holder.

But. That's my opinion and my opinion on such movies is not a good guide since I HATE things being over the top and overblown and unrealistic when a little restraint and sophistication would take the thing to a whole new level.

Just got back from it 30 minutes ago...

I LOVED it!!

It has scary parts and suspenseful parts, but it's mostly about a guy in a desparate situation trying to cope and not go crazy while doing so.

The scary bits were a bit overdone, but it wasn't really a scary movie per se, so that wasn't that important to me.
The suspenseful parts had me on the edge of my seat - literally.

But yeah, what makes it all work is Will Smith. Definitely an Oscar worthy performance. There's this one scene (you know the one I'm talking about, vison) where they don't show you what's happening, but you can hear it, and all the camera shows is a close-up of Will Smith's face and his reaction to it. It's an absolutely heartbreaking scene.

Overall, I guess a little restraint would've made parts of it better, but that's picking nits IMHO. I'm buying it on DVD as soon as it comes out.

eta:
As a bonus, they also played the new trailer for the next Batman movie!
I'm completely geeked out over that one.
But that should go in a different thread.

Lali, I'd definitely say "scary" from my p-o-v. (My review is over on TOB)

Overdone & misleading, per trailer. Didn't like.

I know the scene, Angbasdil, and yes, it was well done. I wish they had shown similar restraint in other areas!!

I tend to agree with cem.

But.

What a terrific movie it COULD have been!!!

I didn't see any trailers for it, so came into it cold. I didn't know it was more or less a horror movie, though, I thought it was more of a . . . straight scifi?

It was horror, for me.

TTBK had his arm around me the whole time & I almost broke his hand from squeezing it so much.

I don't DO horror.

I can handle suspense. I can do mystery. I can watch sci-fi & fantasy & all sorts of odd things....

But I don't like things popping out at me. It was too much. Way too much. I'm still shaking.

But as usual, I agree with vison. There was great potential. I can't wait to read the book... and envision how this could have been done. :)

You expected vampires to not be scary? ;)

I was going to see this last night, but there was a big snow storm and everyone canceled. So I'll see it tonight or next weekend...

They're more like zombies than vampires, just so you know. But your point is spot on.
As zombies movies go, this one was very tame.

But I just can't say enough about Will Smith. His performance is incredible.

Ah, but I didn't know there were zombies OR vampires, you see. I thought it was scifi, not horror/fantasy.

The difference is plain in my mind, if nowhere else!!!!!!!!! :D

Ditto.

I was thinking, from the trailer, that Will Smith was once again going to have to save the planet from aliens, or somethin' like that. Didn't know anything about flesh-eating zombies.

You can better believe I'll be reading movie synopsis for awhile now.

TTBK & I also tend you pick movies based on score composers.... I think we'll be re-thinking that approach from now on. ;)

But I do think, the more I think about it, that this movie could have been so much more.... and I could have even liked it!

I didn't get a nightmare last night, but I was expecting once, especially after seeing that preview for The Poughkeepsie Tapes. *shudder*

Oh, that Poughkeepsie Tapes thing just FREAKED me out. I can't understand why anyone would make such a movie. Why? Why?

I just don't get it. I really don't. It's so sad and awful and I don't understand why people aren't rioting in the streets about it. :(

I had to look it up online last night because I wanted to know if it was for real, or one of those mockumenataries. TTBK said he didn't want to know, if it was for real, but I just had to know....

That was so disgusting.

I know some people who will go see that.... and I always secretly wonder about their sanity. Truly.

I really want to see this movie, and all the more so if it's going to be horrorish.

I've been craving a good freak out lately... :Q

We talked about going yesterday but couldn't work things out with the kids (babysitting). I read the review online at pluggedinonline.com. That guy is always overly cautious, pointing out every single thing that might offend the most conservative person. But anyway he did talk about one scene that I thought might keep me from seeing the entire movie. I just didn't like the sound of it at all. :( And then I suspect the major no-no for me for a movie.

SPOILERS************************

Does the main character die? If so, I don't even want to see it. And then how bad was the scene with the dog?

Lalaith's questions answered:

Yes, he does. But it made sense and didn't bother me because it was almost a "happy ending"? The scene with the dog: it wasn't bad at all, IMHO. It had to be done and he did it. You see nothing but his face.

It was the zombiebloodsuckingvampires that I hated, cuz they are STUPID.

Thanks for the answers, vison and cem.

I doubt I'll go see it now. Zombie vampires probably wouldn't bother me that much, but the other stuff would.
