I just want to say that FINALLY seeing Jesus Christ Superstar starring TED NEELEY himself (at 65 and doing the 'Gethsamene scream' as rockstar-like as EVER) was pure bliss last Saturday. :Wooper: :Wooper: :Wooper:
I think I'm still coming down from that blissful experience. Completely a dream come true, and to think that it almost passed me by!!! :Q

I've been obsessed with the movie/musical for a looooooong time. I own the movie and watch it often, religiously around every Easter time :P
I've always whined that they never come here... and in my time of busyness I did not realize they were here with the farewell tour doing 2 days in Toronto (was not advertised very well, for one...). I found out on day 1 out of 2, watching some STUPID Celine Dion (BLECH) special on tv... the commercial came on and I could not believe my eyes. The, yours truly spontaneity-hating elf, who rarely does last minute things, secured tickets for day 2 of 2 and ran to the theater.

I am so glad it worked out. AMAZING is all I have to say.
I'm not sure if there are any other fans here, but I know the dwarf understands my insanity as he shares it with me :P

A giant sw00n for Ted Neeley, JCS in general, and Andrew Llloyd Webber
*****sw0000000000000000000000000000n******

So lucky! JCS is amazing.

I saw it very spontaneously, too. Went down to box office and ended up with tickets for that night (with Carl Anderson!). I can't imagine a 65 year old Jesus, but Gethsemane live in particular must have been fantastic -- always loved that part.

And now I want to watch the movie.

Belting out Gethsemane at 65? Wow.

I assume you are both talking about the 70s movie? I far prefer the recent filmed stage version. I don't think ALW likes the old movie either. It should be remade!

I saw Steve Balsamo live, with the full 25th Anniversary cast. Zubin Varla, Richard Burt, Johanna Ampril, even Glenn Carter (he was playing Simon Zealot).

Awesome.

I can't match that but atleast I saw Joanna Ampil in Miss Saigon and Glenn Carter in Whistle down the Wind.

The biggest names I've seen were Michael Crawford and Maria Friedman in The Woman in White.. or Denise Van Outen, front row, opening night of Tell me on a Sunday. That was the night Ronnie Corbett talked to me in the men's room. Also the second time I saw ALW himself (first was at the last night of The Beautiful Game), and the second time I was too nervous to approach him.

Ahhh....I would have love to have watched that. I'm in Calgary right now so I miss out on the theatre stuff there. Man, this place needs a bit of that. :help: Just country music stuff here. :blackeye:

Counting down the years until we move back..... ;)

Ted was amazing, and the 65 year old Jesus worked amazingly well surprisingly.
Yep, the 70s Norman Jewison movie is what Im talking about - Iavas, I dont like you ;) :P:P I love that movie and NO it should NOT be remade!!!!!! :P

I've watched a bit of the Glenn Carter stage versions and mistakingly received the cd as a gift, and it totally pales in comparison to me to Ted's Jesus. Sowwy! :P

Iavas, whos ALW?

Awww... Lurker...Calgary cant be that bad? Is it all just about the stampede? :blackeye: ;)

Everything from the 70s should be remade. ;) (Except Star Wars)

Ah, thanks for the brain teaser Iavas :P I'm slow to catch on sometimes, but that provided some stimulation for my tired brain!

ALW, JCS, SE, AOL, POTO, SB, WDTW, TBG, TWIW, I've used em all. :D Actually SB could go two ways.. (is your brain up to it?)

You know if Ted Neeley is still at it, there's no excuse not to do a remake :P

Okay Steve Balsamo makes three ways. The other SB might often be mentioned along with MC...

Just finished watching Jesus Christ Superstar tonight with my family. But the film version that Iavas prefers. I haven't seen the 70s version, but I love the recent one.

But I'm not going to even attempt to figure out all the acronyms thrown about in here. :P

I watched the 2000 JCS last night and I can see why you like it. The art direction is just phenomenal -- that lighting! I want it! There are so many moments that were beautiful and striking. Tony Vincent as Simon Zealotes had interesting expressions and a wonderful voice. Herod was great (as was that overly expressive chorus girl in the back :P) and Annas was so creepy and awesome. The flogging was so well done and I liked that actor's interpretation of Pilate (if not always the execution). But everything else really left something to be desired. Give me Carl Anderson's or Murray Head's Judas any day and Glenn Carter is no Ted Neely or Ian Gillian. (Speaking of whom, this version was so homoerotic!) And Mary could neither act nor sing. No matter how beautifully done a production is, if you don't have a strong Judas (and Jesus for that matter), it can never be completely successful.

So in sum, I suppose, give me 2000 for the pretty, but I still think that 1973 was overall better.
