Music recs for Stellie, as requested! :D

St. Vincent - I don't really know how to describe her music - electronic pop, but with very strong songwriting, I suppose. She reminds me of a quirkier Bat for Lashes - whimsical, but a bit dark. She's got two albums out, but I prefer the first one, Marry Me as the second, Actor is more electronic and sounds a bit harsher.
Favorite songs - Now Now, The Apocalypse Song, Paris is Burning

My Brightest Diamond - Beautiful, haunting voice, beautiful, rich songs. Lots of strings and keyboards.
Favorites - Workhorse, Inside A Boy, Something of an End

Neko Case - Her voice is incredible - she's the 'could sing the phone book and make it interesting' type. Her earlier work definitely has a country twang to it, but her more recent stuff has lost most of that, though she still tends to use a lot of guitars. Very catchy, melodic songs - good stuff to sing along to.
Favorites - This Tornado Loves You, Hold On, Hold On, John Saw That Number

Kat Flint - I recommend her to pretty much everyone I talk to about music because I love her so much. :D Sweet, pretty folky type pop - everything about her, from her voice to her lyrics to her arrangements, are just so nice and lovely. Her music always makes me happy.
Favorites - Lazybones, Candyfloss Branches, The Blinking

I'll stop there - went with all lady singers since we were talking about Bat for Lashes before, but let me know if you wanted any more or anything else - I admit I listen to mostly female-fronted stuff but I do have some variety in my collection! ;)

I've got one album by Neko Case - "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" - and have heard samples of St. Vincent. The others I don't know (yet!) but will definitely give a listen.

There's no dedicated music store in Gib, and the stores that do have music only have the usual suspects, but now that I've got a 160 gig ipod, I've been able to get a lot of stuff online. For about 4-5 hours a week, I just look up music, listen to samples, save names, etc. I refer to the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music quite a bit - have done since I lived in Florida. :blackeye: There's just so much out there that, without friends saying "hey, you might like this!" it's sort of like trying to find diamonds in an industrial sized vat full of cubic zirconia :P

That said, there's some stuff that looks promising, and I'm wondering if you've heard it and what you think. I'll just give a quick list for now, as I'm just doing a short post whilst I eat my lunch ATM :P Quite a bit is older artists that I've only just discovered or rediscovered. Anyway - stuff like:
      • Kristin Hersh, Lisa Germano, Lucius Warbaby, Monte Montgomery, Ray LaMontagne, Kay Hanley, Patty Griffin, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, Bon Iver, Gillian Welch, Fleet Foxes, Old Crow Medicine Show, Laura Pursell, Aimee Mann, Nina Gordan, Matthew Sweet, Moldy Peaches, Feist, Kimya Dawson, Melody Gardot, Kate Voegele, A Fine Frenzy, Rachael Yamagata, Marié Digby, Erin McCarley, Suzanne Vega, Horehound, Bird York, Missy Higgins, Alexi Murdoch, José González, The Beautiful Girls, Brett Dennen.... :Q

Sorry - that turned into a longer list than I thought. :salmon: I'm just trying to sort it from "I think I like this" to "This is downloadable" but there's so much. If you recognize and can recommend any? The sad thing is, I've got a 25 page list saved that I need to sort through of stuff that sounded decent on sample listening or one song listening on Pandora. (and only a one page list of stuff that I've researched further and decided I wanted to eventually download - my list was originally 37 pages, but edited 12 of those down to one. I'm not picky at all :blackeye:

Will definitely add St. Vincent to the download list, and check out the others you recommended :horse:

I definitely know a lot of that list, yes! :)

I'd definitely recommend A Fine Frenzy and Rachael Yamagata - I thought of both when writing out my list yesterday but didn't want to get too crazy overwhelming with links and such all at once. ;) So I'd say check those out, though I'd go with Rachael's first album Happenstance over her second.

I'd also probably have recommended Aimee Mann if I'd thought longer about it, she's awesome. As is Feist, who makes fun little songs.

Bon Iver is kind of hit and miss on the beautiful/dull spectrum for me, but when they hit, it's good. So check them out and see what you think, especially the songs Lump Sum and Skinny Love.

Ray LaMontagne has a great voice but a style that tends to be too simple for me - still, if you don't mind just a guy and his guitar on most songs, he's worth checking out.

Most of the others I recognize I only know from a song or two (though they are good songs - check out Patty Griffin's Burgundy Shoes if you don't know it) so I don't really know any more than you would on them. Fleet Foxes was hugely talked about all over the internet last year, though I was bored with what I heard...but everyone else seemed to like it, so. And I loved Bird York's acting on The West Wing, but never got around to checking out her music.

You shouldn't feel bad about having a lot of stuff to check out - I've constantly got a backlog of several hundred songs waiting to be listened to myself. No other way to know for sure what songs you'll like, after all! :D

I like some Suzanne Vega stuff and also Matthew Sweet. I don't know that I love them so much as to say, "Yes, you should download their music!"

I'm listening to Chris Botti right now on PBS. Man, he is so awesome! I actually like listening to the trumpet when he plays it. (Of course, it helps that he's cute. ;) And that Sting sings sometimes while he plays.)

I loved Suzanne Vega's first album. The one with "Marlene on the Wall" and "Queen and the Soldier". I think it was self-titled. "Small Blue Thing" was great too. And "Undertow". Actually that whole album was brilliant.

Our Lady Peace

Superman's Dead

Life

This is my favourite.

Clumsy

I've known their music since they were students at UofToronto.
I'm proud to say they are my clients. :D Princess has the biggest crush on the lead singer and was speechless when she met him.

I'm a huge sucker for Teddy Geiger whom I discovered on the short lived show Love Monkey. His whole CD is fantabulous but here's a goody These Walls.

ETA: Just saw yummy Nina Gordon your list Stellie so I had to add the ever popular Tonight and the rest of my life. I couldn't find the actual video but this is the song set to an anime montage. I was pretty upset when Nina left Veruca Salt but her solo work is

Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

I have a copy of the only recording in existance, which is awesome. I wish I could share it but I don't own the copyright...

Geez that really stops people these days Crucifer :P and you aren't selling it so I don't think it's illegal. I could be wrong though :)
