Depends on if I get the same kind of harvest as last year. We made jam, and also spicy sauce (inspired by tkemali), and brandied plums. The year before, we barely got enough for snacks.

Nice blackcurrant bush! Now I'm not completely sure if this applies, but if you haven't had seasons with tiny harvests, you may get a tiny harvest this year. My elderberry is doing that at the moment, and looks about that size.

Freiga, did you prune your plum tree? Unpruned, you'll likely alternate between large and small harvests. If you prune well, you can have a large harvest most years. I've no idea whether you already know how to prune trees, but if not, I can explain.

Estel, we prune, but i'm not sure if we are doing it right. I was going to get someone do it professionally, but with pandemic, gardeners are awfully busy.

By the way, would it be okay if we went back to calling you ED? Just so as not to confuse you with the other Estel?

Sure, call me ED.

Basics of pruning: remove any dead wood, remove what is over-crowded or doubling back on itself, and trim long new growth to shorter stems. Make sure you leave plenty of stems of 1) new growth, for next year's fruit, and 2) last year's growth, for this year's fruit. (Or year after and next year, if pruning in autumn. Opinion varies on best time to prune; I prefer early spring when the sap is rising.)

Today I did something I've always wanted to do: I planted a lilac bush

Not sure how it'll do, since it might not get enough sun where it is. But my available planting spaces are limited, so it'll have to go there.

If you've ever walked by a lilac bush, you'll know what I know: lilacs are awesome.

I love lilacs! We had two very large bushes at my childhood home, and, when we built the addition, they were then close to my window. Such a lovely smell! Those bushes would've been on the east side of the house, but they were mostly in the shade due to the huge oak tree also in that side of the house. I hope yours does well!

You have given me hope :D

It does get a period of direct sunlight near the end of the day, maybe a couple of hours, but most of the rest of the time it will be in the shade.

Lilacs are one of those plants that don't do well here. Not cold enough. Although I've seen a couple bushes that look like lilacs around the neighborhood.

But yes, lilacs are beautiful and amazing.

My first failure of the year - Napa cabbage bolted. I guess it means RIP cabbage?

Ilove lilacs, too. I remember the two trees in my grandmother's garden...a white and mauve, right next to each other.

Any tips on sprouting basil seeds? I don't seem to have any luck lately.

Do I need a special type of soil?

Don't think so, Jude, just keep the soil moist and warm on a sunny windowsill.

It might be quicker to buy basil and stick a few sprigs into a water glass until roots form.

Those revolting little bugs are back - remember the ones that infest my blackcurrant bush? I'm going to have to be extra diligent about spraying it with insecticidal soap every day from now on.

Speaking of insecticidal soap - I put a little dish soap at the bottom of a spray bottle, and then fill it with water. Does that sound about right?

I don't know if I'll be able to keep on top of this - every day I spray and spray, and they just keep coming back. There's just so much of them. And the plant is so large and complex that I may be missing some branches, however much I try.

I wonder if I should prune it back drastically. That may mean I don't get blackcurrant jam this year, but it may mean that by focusing on a smaller plant I can eradicate this aphid problem once and for all.

I feel like Maria might have some good advice. Or Rose or nienna. I have no advice for you. I am not a gardener in the least. If it were me, I'd just have to research the heck out of it and hope for the best.

I don't recall my mum ever complaining about these aphids on her blackcurrant bushes, so I don't really have any advice other than what can be found on the internet. Sorry... :(

Well, look what ended up in my youtube feed:

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that youtube is spying on my google searches, since they're owned by the same company. Should I be freaked out or grateful?

The only thing I can think of to deal with aphids is to plant flowers that attract ladybugs.
