Several years ago I participated in an art project fund raiser for our local shelter. They had area artists take chair & design them with their own personal touch. The chairs were then put up for silent auction at the annual art festival.

Even though I wasn't an "established" artist, since I was an employee of the shelter at the time, I was able to talk my way into getting a chair to design. For that year I wood burned tigers on the chair & I'm pleased to say it ended up being a top seller. (Take that, for not being an established artist!) Pictures of that chair: Link, Link, Link.

Last year we happened upon the auction while strolling through the art fair & I told the head of the fund raiser I'd love to participate again. Several months ago she dropped a chair off at our house... and several days ago ( ;) ) I got to work on it.

Here's a time line of the work in progress:

I work best under pressure so I preferred the procrastination bit. (I'm dropping it off at the art fair tomorrow. The auction starts Saturday!) The finished chair is pyrography (wood burning) with pastel & colored pencil.

Very pretty?

How are you keeping the pastel in place, just in case someone wants to sit on the chair?

I sealed it with several coats of clear gloss.

I sat on it last night, just to be sure. No pastel on my butt. :D

Wow Cem! That's fantastic! Your wood burning is really good, especially the tigers.

So, this means you are officially an established artist now, right? I mean, you sold one of your works, which is more than a lot of so called artists can say!

Well, tinwe, I've been selling my art since I was 14... so I'm not sure how established I am. :P I imagine I can't be officially established until TTBK & I are starving in a gutter somewhere because my art is like children & I can no longer bear to part with it....

:D

The chair this year ended up selling, but not for top dollar. I suppose I shouldn't feel too bad, as they had to lower the initial bid on 10 chairs because they weren't getting bids. It's a tough economy.

I've already agreed to do another one next year... I think I might pick something equine as my theme... it's a subject I know well, as I've been drawing horses since I was 5 years old!
