Some of my thoughts...

Queen Latifah did a nice singing job during the memoriums but it was a bad decision to try and focus the camera on her as much as they did (or perhaps at all, other than at the beginning). I couldn't even read several of the names! :? Not good. Especially for a year like that where we lost a lot of big names. I was feeling sad all over again. Stan Winston and Michael Crichton... sigh. Roy Scheider was a sexy bitch.

Really wanted Wall E to win one of the sound categories. Not just because the effects are amazing, but with so little dialogue in the film, you have to rely on the sounds and visuals to get through the story. I'm so glad there was a nice long section about that on the DVD. I like learning about the technical side of things. I know who actors, writers, and directors are because they're at every other award show: give the editors and costumers and chance now! Speaking of which... wish The Dark Knight had won for editing. I'll be seeing Slumdog this week so it could also be amazing, but yeah TDK stood out so much in that department. Omg how tense were the scenes with the city officials being assassinated, or wondering if the civilians on the ferry would activate the bomb, or Dent would pull the trigger? Brilliant, bone-chilling editing.

Was anybody watching the red carpet stuff on KTLA? If I find a clip, I'll post it, but when the interviewers were asking Mickey Rourke what his next step was at this point in his career, like if there was "anything he'd like to do next", he gave the woman an elevator look, grinned, and then walked on down the carpet. It was amazing. :D :LMAO: Fuck the people saying this is his comeback, that's what Sin City was, yo, and he kicked ass in there too. ;)

I giggled at the few jabs made at The Reader. It was like they were saying, "yeah, we dunno why it's up here either." Again, could be fab. But I think myself and many others would have preferred seeing a few other films in there instead. At least you know Kate Winslet could laugh at such remarks. Maybe the director was there ripping his hair out, though, idk.

Documentaries about the World Trade Center or 9/11 are taking over Nazi/WWII films as the ones to beat in this category. ;)

Will Smith's burn at Oscar movies not having fans was mean. But rang true, in a year like this. Especially coming from him, maybe the last big blockbuster guy left.

The Pineapple Express bit was great. James Franco butchering "Spielzeugland" was greater.

Thank you Milk writer, for those shirtless pictures floating around online, and for reminding people that God loves them no matter what. Holy fuck has it been bothering me that in general, religious beliefs are equated with hate and persecution which historically, okay people have screwed up. But I don't think any of them are actually based on hatred. I get teary-eyed when people have to remind us of the big happy family we all really are or could be, so it was lovely to hear that, and that God is a loving duder. You're damn right he is. And thank you Sean Penn for calling Hollywood homo-loving commies. :damnfunny:  Three years ago, Brokeback Mountain grossed out a few too many to win, and now not only does Heath have an Oscar but Milk had an entirely respectable showing tonight. I, too, hope that there is re-evaluation and shameful feelings in a few folks. Let's give these Hollywood people more uplifting material to base their biopics on, yes?

I've been up for 24 hours and neither feel it or regret it haha.

And I got 11 out of 24 predictions right. A poor year for me (the last several have been between 15 and 18) but it was still fun to run down the nominees five minutes before the show started and check off a few ideas. Some year, I will win an office pool dammit. :rage:

Lurker, wow. Was the screening in Calgary? I don't think of that as a small city or anything, but I also wouldn't associate it as a place he'd premiere a movie at. Very awesome.

EDIT: oh, and I loved the Joaquin Phoenix burn. Very topical and possibly forgettable, depending on how things turn out there, but I was laffin'.

Loved the opening bit. Very Billy Crystal. With Anne Hathaway suddenly singing perfectly, and publically for the first time in front of a billion people, I had hoped it would be a more intimate and interactive Oscars. Intimate, yes. But the opening sequence was the highlight, only matched by Tina Fey and Steve Martin presenting together.

Queen Latifah singing and Bill Mahar presenting were both lowlights and Hugh Jackman just being Cabaret Man, albeit highly talented, was wearing thin towards the end. Not much actual hosting, really. The musical tribute was pointless. More of a Jackman tribute to be honest.

Speeches are speeches. Some are entertaining, some emotional, and some just a reel of names. But it's their moment, not mine, so I shouldn't really comment on them. But Kate Winslet's was good.

But the worst part of the evening was James Franco screwing up the pronunciation of Spielzeugland. I would be pretty pissed if a presenter hadn't bothered to make the effort and diluting the zenith of my career. That's not really Hollywood celebrating achievement - it's just laziness and appeared disparaging of non-English efforts. I hope Seth Rogan was laughing out of embarrassment.

Weirdly enough, for me one of the funniest acceptance speeches was actually for Best Foreign Language Film. Of course I'm prejudiced. Karakter, a Dutch movie (you can guess what it translates to and maybe Franco wouldn't have had a problem with it)), took the Oscar in 1998. Mike Van Diem collected the award: "The film is 'Karakter.' It opens next Friday, I'm not going to advertise it. This ought to tell you -- this ought to tell you that it probably has, you know, like damn stunning subtitles!"

As a show, it was one of the better ones - I managed to stay awake through the whole thing. Too bad Rourke did not win for that great performance. The Academy normally rewards the roles where an actor does the physical transformation bit.

Well the only big surprise was Penn taking it over Rourke. I had thought Rourke was going to win. Slumdog was no big surprise, I figure it would win, Ledger winning again was a given (a good given in all ways possible).

Ben Stiller's bit was :damnfunny:

I agree with *E* they should have focused less on Queen Lat. and more on those screens.

Maybe I am just not in touch with popular culture as much as others here but I was totally in thedark what Ben Stiller was doing. It made absolutely no sense to me at all. And after it was explained to me it still seemed like "what the hell was that about?"

I did not like the little intro's from past winners for the acting awards. I would much rather see a clip of the performance. Hopkins was terrible in his delivery. DeNiro usually is terrible in real life but he did a decent job on the Penn suck-up. And thats what it looked like to me.

What was explained to you about Ben Stiller, sf?

From what I know, he was just skewing Joaquin Phoenix's weird recent behavior, who apparently quit acting for a rap career and to never shower again. He went on the Letterman show, which got him even more attention and made people think it was all a joke on the level of Andy Kauffman. He may be doing it for some kind of documentary with Casey Affleck. I can't bring myself to watch it just yet but here it is on youtube: link. Is supposed to be super awkward and annoying. Some folks think he may be genuinely sick though. Either way, it's probably only funny in his own head. :P

EDIT: here's Rourke's acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit awards, Saturday night: link. I think I love this man. So hope I enjoy his film! I got a copy of Barfly around here somewhere, should watch it. He was always the only redeeming quality of Diner for me.

Evenstar - just the same Phoenix stuff that you related here. It seems like a really dumb idea to me. But then I am not the TMZ target audience so maybe they do not care if I get it or not. Half of the commercials on TV these days go right over my head. The only stuff that makes sense are the commercials on the news programs for health problems. My favorite line is the one with the "if you have an erection lasting more than four hours, call a doctor". Heck, I am going to call the Guiness book of World Records.

:LMAO:

My personal favourite part of those Viagra ads is having to explain them to little kids. The boards at hockey rinks have these big banners for Viagra and you see them while watching the games on TV and both my boys asked "what's Viagra?"

You betcha. :LMAO:

Vison --- There has to be a funny hockey metaphor for Viagra but in my old age I just cannot find it.

Anybody?

No. You're thinking it's an assist. It's actually a poke-check.

Stood and clapped. It was somewhat moving.

His sister and parents accepted in his place for Matilda.
