Got a fudged up computer and don't know if this laptop will be able to show a live stream of the announcements (last year it wasn't aired on tv so I had to catch it online) so was hoping that people could post things here if they're interested. Especially if I don't get up for the alarm lol. I dunno why I do this every year but meh, will give it another go.

If Heath Ledger isn't nominated, the day will suck even more so, being the anniversary of his death and all. :( I'm sure he will, but still won't forget what tomorrow is. Haven't yet decided if the huge-ass Joker poster above my bed was a really good, or really bad idea. :P

As usual, most of the front-runners are movies that were released in like five theatres last month. I hate keeping so up-to-date with releases every year and then still never hearing of most things that get nominated for SAGs and Golden Globes. It's like all of a sudden: so yeah, this independant British film? Gonna win all the acting categories. No, of course it hasn't come out in Canada yet! Of course John Williams did the score! Feh. (Not talking about anything in particular, just how surprised I always feel - I swear they come out of nowhere heh.)

Didn't see much in theatres this year. Rented even less. I'm really only going for The Dark Knight, Wall-E, and Cloverfield if they can remember that far back. Lawd, how I would love to see TDK in there for Best Picture, longshot though it may be. But I'll be truly disappointed if it doesn't get nods for the score, editing, and screenplay. Or no one invites Aaron Eckhart to the ceremony (the man was just born to make tuxes look good, people).

In sum: TDK ra ra ra!!!

Two nods for The Dark Knight, but no Best Picture. Nice to see Ledger get the nom.

Heh, I only remember the hospital being blown up and that helicopter being brought down during the batpod chase. Must be all about Two Face... Oh, and as for art direction, the credit should go to whoever built Chicago. ;)

Here's to you, Heath. *finishes drink then passes out, finally*

Visual effects, like makeup, are best done when they are not noticed.

I am sure there we lots of effects in DK that were not noticed since the movie was so well done. I am a little dissapointed it didn't get nominated for more non technical stuff.

Gotta say I think they got most of it right this time. A pretty impressive list. Glad to see Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei get acting recognition for WRESTLER.

 to the list. I saw BENJAMIN BUTTON. It was an entertaining way to spend a few hours but it was really just a tepid retelling of the Forest Gump story (replace mentally slow guy with backwards-aging guy). Otherwise, :salmon: :salmon: :salmon: to the Academy for not giving more recognition to the spectacular The Wrestler. And Wall-E and TDK both deserve to in Best Pic. Milk was quite good but those two were much better.

No, I getcha. But there can be a point where you can tell it is really amazing effects, rather than none at all. For the latter, I'm thinking of the CGI baby in Children of Men, and also the entirety of the French film Irreversible, which if you've listened to the DVD commentary you'd be blown away by the percentage of scenes that use computer effects in some way or another. In both of those, I had no idea I was watching any FX, let alone ones so flawless. But it seems like for the Oscars, you usually have to be pretty flashy to get attention. I always wished there were stricter rules about the visual and makeup effects nominations (acting as well, though that will NEVER happen), cuz look at what they do with the music and foreign picture categories.

I feel the same as yov, either because I saw the movies, or got the gist of their reception from trusted reviewers and such. I've only seen four of the nominated flicks (Dark Knight, Wall-E, Wanted, and Iron Man - will check but I think in other years I'd usually caught at least a half dozen or 10 or something, so yeah yikes), but at least The Visitor is on the movie network this month.

Hell, I liked the movie too, Don, but it's reception, while favorable, was fairly tepid: http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/b ... button2008. And jeez, look at The Reader's reviews: http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/reader. (haven't seen that one and don't plan to...)
Compared to the far more positively received TDK, WALL-E, and The Wrestler. I just think there were far better movies out this year and was disappointed to see Oscar recognition go to the typical Serious Big-Production Epic that The Academy always seems to go for.

I did like BUTTON a great deal. Worth 13 nominations ? I think not. But it is worthy of a Best Picture nomination.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for THE WRESTLER since it is modeled on the small independent hardcore wrestling circuit that I myself worked in in the in 1990's as a manager and sometimes ring grappler. I still have the back injuries to prove it.

Supposedly Rourke was modeled after the character of Sabu - a guy from Lansing, Michigan, nephew of the infamous Shiek from the Sixties and a guy who I managed against Terry Funk, Rob Van Dam and others.,,, as well as Funk himself. It was lots of fun and I saw up close how really tought these guys were and how much pain they went through to entertain people.

I hope Rourke wins.

ah, I see what you are saying Yov. I agree, but the academy awards always tend to go for the big dramas so I never expected Wall-e to be in there for best picture and thought TDK was unlikely. I'm not annoyed or suprised at their picks, just happy to see a movie that I liked and plan on buying in the running.
One that I AM annoyed at is Revolutionary Road. I was pretty depressed for a couple of days after seeing that one. :( Anyone else see it?

The two nominations for Iron Man were well deserved IMHO. Glad to see Defiance getting some at least minor recognition. But I haven't even seen it yet as it just came out in the theater. The trailer has me wanted to see it. Wall-E was pretty good stuff. If you consider how little dialog is actually in the film it is impressive how effectively they were able to communicate through the visual medium.

I guess I'll have to see the Benjamin Button movie at some point. Brad Pitt has an Oscar nomination for best actor of the year for that movie? He isn't a bad actor but he has never impressed me with a deep nuanced performance either. So I guess this is supposed to be pretty special performance then?

I haven't seen slum dog millionaire. But the other two movies (Sunshine and 28 days later) by the same director were both interesting.

No Grand Torino. No Boy in the Striped Pajamas. No Valkrie. Nothing for the box office record breaking Bond movie (haven't seen it yet myself).

RELStuart wisely mentioned the snub to GRAN TORINO. I thought Eastwood clearly deserved an acting nomination for his efforts. Eastwood reminds me so much of Paul Newman. As he ages he becomes like fine wine and only gets better.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs. - John Rogers

This is my post from Hof with regards to my fave movie of all time Slumdog Millionaire!

I had the opportunity to watch it during a special screening. All I can say is, I love it! I love it!

My god, this one of the best movies I ever seen. No wonder it won the People's Choice Award during the Toronto International Film Festival.

It's about this poor, uneducated guy who joined Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (India) trying to win 20 Million Rupees. He was able to answer the questions eventhough he uneducated because it has a sort of connection to his life. Who would have thought George Washington or the inventor of the revolver will have a huge impact in his life.

Man, the art direction and cinematography were superb. I like the way they blended the harsh way of life in India to the story without it being the "ultimate" focus of the story. Most of the time I watch this independent film I go, yeah, I know they are poor in that part of the country, tell me something else, man! Here, it's like you forget that they live in a slum, just for a minute and think about how the little boys weaving in and out of the slums to get away from the big bad policemen was what it was like being a kid whose been naughty. Makes me think, it's not too bad if you live in the slums because you still get to have fun. Boys will be boys anywhere. There were other scenes that will really touch your heart and that you will say how lucky I am living where I am right now where there is freedom and not seeing children "working" for their meal. I don't want to give away much of the story line. This is a must see movie!!!

This is in English btw a few subtitles when the boys were young but the way they blend in the subtitles it was really artistic, not just words beneath the screen.

I want this to win Best Picture! Go out there and watch this!

Basically, they just played a few bars of 'Baby of Mine' over and over again, with one variation: the slushy cello chords on their own, without the tune on the top. Boooooriiiing!
