700,000 voters have named THE RETURN OF THE KING as the Ultimae Best Picture of all time in an online poll taken by Yahoo. Many different films were placed in tournament style brackets and pitted against each other. ROTK defeated THE GODFATHER to win the title.

Defeated The Godfather? Damn. That's rather impressive...

It helps to have a devoted following of the book and the movie, who read the book religiously and watch the movie repeatedly, and join websites to talk about same. Not something you can say about any other movie.

You are correct Laureanna, you would think it would help ... however, sometimes when I look at the reaction of hardcore JRRT book people on some sites, it causes me to wonder if some Tolkien sites would be a rallying call to vote against the film. There are some JRRT sites where it is a badge of honor that you hate the films and never waste an opportunity to dump on them in any way you can. I posted this news on one such JRRT site and there were many posts expressing very negative feelings that ROTK won this distinction. The book purists take it as a slap in the face that people love the movie while they do not. Any good news about the films is bad news for their point of view.

Hm... SF has a point. I simply loved the films, but I think I would be hesitant to vote for ROTK, partly because I believe FOTR to be the most perfect of the three, but also because I can't help thinking that other films probably deserve it more. Being a very hardcore fan, I am aware of the fact that I probably overrate their importance as films, and so I am also quite ambivalent about hearing what is ostensibly good news.

No. Just no.
Not even close. The Godfather is a way better film.
And there are many others.

*agrees with Holbytla*

For starters, FOTR was better.

Hell the Wizard of Oz was a better "film".

These polls show up fairly regularly. RotK may have won this one (and it is considered an excellent film by critical and popular consensus) but there are other films which win them far more consistently. I think it’s too early to really see where the LotR films will settle, but I doubt that they’ll be considered the best films of all time.

BBC reported on another poll that put the Godfather at the top:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7633022.stm" target="_blank

The Godfather named 'best movie'

Mafia film The Godfather has been named the greatest movie of all-time in a poll of over 10,000 cinema-goers, film-makers and critics.

The 1972 Francis Ford Coppola film, starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, headed Empire magazine's top 500 poll.

Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back came second and third, with The Shawshank Redemption and Jaws following behind.

Directors including Quentin Tarantino and Mike Leigh took part in the poll.

Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now, Singin' in the Rain, Pulp Fiction and Fight Club made up the rest of the top 10.

The latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, was the only 21st Century film to make the top 20, and all three instalments of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy secured top 60 spots.

There were some surprises in the top 500 however, with classics such as Easy Rider, The Sound of Music and Oscar winner Shakespeare in Love not making the list.

Only two British films made the top 100 - A Clockwork Orange at number 37 and Casino Royale at 56.

Goldfinger was the only other James Bond film to feature in the list.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was also the only film of its franchise to get into the top 500, at 471.

In total, 10,000 cinema-goers, 150 Hollywood directors and 50 film critics had their say in the poll.
