When you described the prickle bombs, I immediately thought of the Liquidamber, but as Lali said, definitely not the tree you were looking at, as it has maple-like leaves. Right now, the ones around here are turning lovely shades of fluorescent red and yellow.

It's actually one of my favorite trees. They are so beautiful in the fall, and I don't mind the "prickle bombs." (I like that name for them! I think I usually call them sweetgum balls, which sounds kind of funny. ;) ) I have a mental list of "Trees I Want at My Next House." Sweetgum is on it, as are weeping willows, white pines, white ashes, etc.

Put that on the list of trees you want near your new house, but not too near. They do horrible things to foundations and sidewalks, with their aggressive roots. We call the seed pods asteroids.

Oh, good to know. Are they worse than silver maples?

Anybody recognize these things:

This tree's leaves and bark are extremely similar to the first tree, but this one has these pinkish papery fruit (?) things. They're all over the place here and you see bunches of fruit things brownishly drying out on trees right now.

I assume it's some kind of fruit because the papery pod things have what look like seeds inside:

Any thoughts?

Weird. You guys have weird trees in Florida. Those are my thoughts. :P

Honestly, it looks like what we call a money plant.

Obviously, that's not what it is, but the seedpods are kind of similar.

They look like elm or hop tree. What do the leaves look like up close? Elm leaves are crinkled, hop tree leaves are not.

There was a way to do it! :D I don't know if it still exists or not, but I was able to do it back then.

It's the first google result in my computer too. Maybe that's just because there isn't much competition.

It's also mentioned here: Somewhere in Paraguay blog. Is that you as well, or did someone come across your link and repeat it, assuming it was legit?

Unfortunately, now THIS thread comes up in search as well, thus destroying the mystique.

I know. Sad.

I don't know about the other blog. I will have to look that up!

And it may come up first now in general, but it didn't back then. I just remember setting it so that when she googgled it, my blog came up.

If you don't know about it, it means the author somehow located your page and did a copy-paste into their own blog (without attribution, of course). And now anyone who reads their blog will simply assume it's true. Before long, the PVD will be mentioned casually in research papers as something everyone already knows about. Five hundred years from now, historians will debate whether this was a real animal or an elaborate hoax that was never uncovered. The debate will become more and more heated, eventually leading to a quantum war that annihilates all of galactic civilization. Nice going.

The technical term for this is "pulling a flying moose", after the infamous incident in which some reporter, doing some quick last-minute research for an upcoming interview with Cate Blanchett, looked up the plot for The Lord of the Rings and happened upon the spoof synopsis in the satirical Flying Moose site, and informed her readers that Blanchett would be playing Galadriel, "who rescues the fellowship from the clutches of her beautiful but evil sister, Queen Beruthiel".
