So my daughter plays the flute for three years now. All the pupils of her flute teacher do a concert every year to show the parents what they have learned. Last week was the summer concert and Jana had a very nice Irish piece to play called "The Irish Piper". She loved it a lot and wants to do more of that sort. Unfortunately, her teacher says that it's hard to come by note sheets or books with Irish tunes for flute over here.

What I found on the web was http://www.flutetunes.com/ which provides rather nice things for free. But, well, it's not a very wide selection, though they claim to grow every day.

Can anyone recommend an online shop where I could buy a book with Traditional Irish Songs for Flute?

And next thing is, a friend of mine sings in a choir and he and his fellow-singers want to do an evening with Irish drinking songs. I wonder if there are any at all..... :D (as we all know the Irish don't drink and sing :P) :D :D :D  Again, we're looking for notes and words and maybe a recommandation of a song selection.

Help?
:Wooper:

Areanor, I just did a quick Google search and it gave me loads:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid ... +for+flute

Your best bets are http://www.musicroom.com and http://www.sheetmusicplus.com

I don't know your daughter's level, but I can recommend these books:

http://www.melbay.com/product.asp?ProductID=98267BCD

http://www.melbay.com/product.asp?ProductID=94526

http://www.melbay.com/product.asp?ProductID=WM1314CD

http://www.melbay.com/product.asp?ProductID=98773WW

Those are for pennywhistle, but they can all be used for flute.

http://www.melbay.com/results.asp?Categ ... ntinued=no

This is the flute main page.

It might be easier to find pennywhistle music, which as a C instrument, will work nicely for flute. There is another book I really like, but I didn't see it on that website. I'm not home, so I can't check. It would be for a more advanced student.

As a trad Irish musician, very few old tunes would be written for a specific instrument, as far as I know. Most can be played on a variety of instruments, flute included. More recently written tunes might be for specific instruments, but they'd usually go unpublished anyway. Most trad anthologies/collections should be ok.

That is true, but when looking for sheet music or music books, you usually have to look for a specific instrument--at least here in the U.S. Therefore, a helpful place to start is to look for pennywhistle (also called tin whistle) music. The flute is nice (as compared to the clarinet, for example) because any C-instrument music will work for reading and playing.

Really? That's odd. Any I've seen here have just been for anything, as they tend to be played by trad bands, consisting of various instruments.

Well, you are in Ireland. :D I'm guessing that makes a difference. We have to hunt around a bit more for traditional Irish music. (And please don't burst our bubble if what we're playing actually isn't trad!) Besides, getting a whole band together is a great goal, but, often, you're playing on your own. Students (or performers in non-professional settings like church) often use the accompaniment CDs, too, while they play the melody on whatever instrument they have.

What Lali said... over here it's just the same. There are books for piano, books for flute, books for guitar... and so on.
I'll look on Amazon for trad collections, maybe I'll find something. Or might there be an Irish book shop specialised on note books?

Thanks Nienna and Lali for the links, I'll take a look as soon as my printer is replaced. Why do these things always give up their life when one needs them? :bang:

Lali, you link to melbay was worth a bag of gold. There I found a german retailer which seems to have just the thing I was looking for. http://www.mailordermusic.net/oxid.php/ ... uerfl%F6te
