I know. But there you go. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that I really rather hate his movies.

No offense to the many people who love his stuff. Something about his style hurts my soul.

Huh. I don't think I've met anyone before who hates Tim Burton.

But it's allowed. ;)

Thanks. :D

Well, Freddy hates him, too.

Hate might be too strong a word for me but I...think he kinda sucks. He makes kinda dumb movies with flashy-but-often-soulless art direction. Flashy visuals aside, he's a pretty dull storyteller. IMO!

I think some of what hurts Tim Burton movies is that Johnny Depp plays the same eccentric character and he's featured far too much. It becomes Tim Burton presents: Johnny Depp and a story.

As much as I think Depp is a cutie boy, I agree about the over use of eccentric characters.

"Hate" might be too strong of a word. How about "strongly dislike"?

And that's the thing that annoys me about Johnny Depp, too--he tends to play that same character over and over, and I just think that's...weird. (Honestly, watching him in interviews, I don't think the eccentric, weird character is too far off of his true personality.)

The problem is that Edward Scissorhands was just too good not to try to replicate...

I like Edward Scissorhands a lot. He might be different from the rest by virtue of being the first. He was quieter, though. Depp's Willy Wonka, Jack Sparrow and what appears to be his Hatter are all big talkers.

I love Jack Sparrow, but can do without the rest. Johnny Depp is a poser, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. I suspect he could act, given a chance.

So this premieres today....is anyone rushing out to see it?

Sadly, I will have to wait until next weekend to get to a 3D viewing.... :(

It's Ozzie's 13th birthday today and this is what he wants to see for his birthday. Which I guess means I'll see it too as there is nothing else on at the theatre that I want to see.

We're planning to take our 8-year-old daughter next weekend as a birthday treat for her and myself...so if it's too scary, please let me know before then!!!

So we saw Alice last night. I didn't much like it. Ozzie said, "it was worth lining up for". He just turned 13, and that was his opinion.

No spoilers!

The actors were okay. The girl who plays Alice is very good.

There are a couple of "scary" scenes, but I don't think it's too much for an 8 year old.

When I saw Avatar, and went to Pandora, I thought it was a real world.

Wonderland (Underland) did not seem "real" to me. It probably wasn't supposed to. The beginning, which is set in Victorian/Edwardian England, was incredibly stupid. That set my teeth on edge, so I wasn't in the mood to enjoy the rest.

All in all, I didn't much like it and would not bother seeing it again.

Thanks, vison :)
I'm not totally sure I want to bother now, having seen the review from a poster on TORC

SPOILER!!!
Quote:
I just saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D and..... ARRRGGGGGHHHH.

I am now solidly against the Hobbit being in 3D. Alice was totally mutilated! It was almost as if the plot didn't matter. In the attempt to make Alice a stronger female character, they have her slaying the Jabberwocky. To put a love interest, they have her and Mad HAtter being attracted to each other. To put some social relevance, the Red Queen is now a despot and the Knave is her henchman. All the charm and silliness is gone!

Don't they dare do this to the Hobbit!

I just came home from seeing it. I thought it was okay. Many nice scenes, and I like most of the characters. But the story as a whole felt... amputated, like a large chunk was missing from the middle of it; and then the climax was too short and underwhelming as well.

And argh, the 3D! The picture was blurry throughout the entire movie! Worse than Avatar, but I thought Avatar suffered from it as well. I don't like 3D at all, and I hate that it's become a trend. I think it hardly adds anything to the movie, and then there's a ton of downs. Why can't the people who make movies see this? :(

This is a little late in the discussion, but I just wanted to say how glad I am to see that I am not the only person who strongly dislikes Tim Burton. :P I just can't get into any of his movies! So I probably won't be seeing Alice. But I hope those who do see it enjoy it! :)

(But I do hope Burton fans enjoy this latest movie. It's fun to watch a great movie.)

I saw this on Sunday.

The important thing to realize is that the movie is more of a 'dark continuation' than a remake. If you're expecting a happy Alice tale, that isn't what you're going to get... It takes place when Alice is twenty and Wonderland isn't very happy any longer.

There were some scenes that made me cringe, mostly (spoilers here)
Quote:
the stabbing out of eye theme throughout the movie and there is a scene where a miniature Alice is jumping across the moat using the heads of the Red Queen's victims as stepping stones.
It's hard to make me cringe, I didn't have trouble with Saving Private Ryan...but perhaps the issue was simply that I wasn't expecting it in a movie like this.

I loved it, though. Christopher Lee as the Jabberwocky was a wonderful treat.
