The "Institution" episode - that was one of the scariest things I've ever seen. :Q

Oh, I hated that one! I always skip it when rewatching the series. :spider:

Of course, I always skip "The Body", too. I just can't take that one. :bawl:

Just finished season 6. It was briliiant. :thumbsup

And I see that a prediction I made earlier in this thread actually happened. In the last thirty seconds of the season. Well done, me!

I'm just over half-way, and I'd think that season 5 is darker.
I take it back. :D

Yup - it'll be interesting to see how this plays out in Season 7!

I just started Season 7...

So does anyone else think the opening of episode 2 is a tribute to "Run Lola, Run"?

If I knew what "Run, Lola, Run" was I might have an opinion on that.

It's an excellent movie that runs through the same scenario multiple times, and has different outcomes based on the timing of what happens at the beginning. If your library has it, I highly recommend it!

"Storyteller" - another candidate for Best Episode. It strikes just the right balance of imparting a serious message with quirky original humour. :thumbsup

It's sad that I only have a few episodes left to watch :(

Cheer up, you aren't far from a really good series finale.

How do you like Nathan Fillion's character? A coworker of mine was a Buffy addict when the show was on, and she really did NOT like Firefly when I gave her a copy, just because he was in it.

He's really, really creepy in that role. I'm glad I saw Firefly first, or I might have the same prejudice.

I don't think the role is supposed to be likeable. :D

It does show off his versatility as an actor, though.

You must have finished it by now! What did you think of the finale?

I finally saw "Run, Lola, Run" a few days ago. I don't think the Buffy episode had that much in common, other than the time loopiness. You get just as much of that in "Ground Hog's Day" and that episode in SG1 called "Window of Opportunity".

With "Ground Hog's Day" and "Run, Lola, Run" you have some unknown outside agency causing the time loops until the characters "get it right". With that Buffy episode - she also has to "get it right", but the people causing the time loop are known (and annoying). With the SG1 episode, an alien device is causing time loops which occur until the machine is shut off.

Of those four, I like the SG1 episode best. "Run, Lola, Run" suffered from what I call the "why should I care?" syndrome. The movie makers did not give me enough reason to care what happened to her during the first part of the film. By the time the final loop came around, I was mildly interested in her plight and wondered what she'd do differently this time around but it was slow getting to that point. Some movie makers are quite heavy handed with the "why you should care" bit at the beginning and that can be quite annoying, but the opposite extreme runs the risk of losing me altogether.

The most interesting part of the movie, frankly, was the fact that it was originally in German and filmed in Berlin. It's quite interesting how many of the lip movements sync up as opposed to an Asian language dubbed film! I'd never seen a German/English dubbed film before. Yes, I lived in Germany for years, but no- there really weren't any opportunities to see dubbed films there, if you think about it!

And, of course, there was the fun of trying to see places we'd been when we visited Berlin. Didn't actually spot any, but it always seemed that just around the corner might be some place we visited.....

So, all in all, I'm glad we watched it, but it won't ever be one of my favorites.

One of the episodes started with a girl with punk hair being chased in some European city - that's what made me think of Run Lola Run - not the time loops.

You saw it dubbed? I saw it in German with English subtitles. I don't like dubbed movies - the voice actors rarely live up to the live ones.

I haven't seen the SG1 episode yet - I've got season 1 reserved but it'll be a few months before I reach the front of the queue.

The Buffy finale was great! I'm just sad that I've reached the end of it all.

OK, now I feel stupid! I didn't bother to look up which episode you were talking about, since from your description of "Run, Lola, Run" I assumed you were talking about the episode "Life Serial" where Buffy experiences that time loop caused by the three.

Edit: and yes I got the dubbed version. After our last film that we had to watch subtitles on my husband has flat out refused to do so again. He hates them. So, dubbed it is if he's going to watch with me.

OK, my younger daughter had a interesting Buffy related story to tell.

She often has Buffy watching parties for her friends. They all come over for an evening and watch a few episodes of Buffy and generally hang out. Some of them started bringing crosses, stakes and holy water for the occasions.

One of her friends who still goes to high school was stopped in the hall for some reason and his backpack was searched. To his shock, he'd made a mistake and grabbed the wrong backpack that morning. The one the officials looked through was his Buffy party pack, and had a wooden cross, some stakes, the water and a knife in it. :Q He's in trouble now!

He tried to explain, but the rules are the rules and he has to go through the suspension process. No one would listen to his protests and attempts at explanation. By the time he got to the review board he was rather angered by the whole process and then they asked WHY would he carry these things around in his backpack?

So, he just looks disgusted at them and says, "Why do you THINK I'm carrying them?" (You know, with the implication that there are vampires in the school.) So, he's busted. A week's suspension from school for being a Buffy fan. Kind of cool, actually.

[...x-post from HoF...]

....aaaaaand I just watched the Buffy series finale. And I'm feeling kinda...disappointed.

It wasn't terrible but after the ever-increasing amazingness of each season, the last season felt like it was fairly weak in general and I was really hoping the final solution wouldn't just be another "here's some random magic thing we found last minute" (also see: Angel's disappointing season 4 apocalypse solution). And I was really hoping The First's big, scary plan was more impressive than the lame "here's a bunch of ugly monsters for you to stab". I really appreciated what they tried to do with the "give all the power" thing, that was a lovely moment, but in a show that never cared too much about making sense it made even less sense than usual and, maybe worse, didn't even really feel like it accomplished much in the moment. All in all a minor let down for a show I otherwise very much came to love.

I have to confess I didn't really like the last season either.

One of the great appeals of the show was the goofy likeability of the main character, and in Season 7 there were times when she was insufferable and self-righteous.

But it did have a lot of great moments.
