Yes, it's great news - it was announced back in June in the Queen's birthday honours list over here.

His knighthood is for services to drama and charity. He is a leading supporter of UNICEF, particularly the charity’s Child Survival Campaign.

http://www.looktothestars.org/celebr ... pher-leeâ€

He is also in the Guiness Book of World Records for having have credits in over 300 movie and TV productions, making him the most credited movie actor in history.

And as an aside, he's also registered in the Guiness Book of World Records as the world's tallest leading actor (6'5") ;- )

:toast: That's very cool!

Sometimes I think these knighthoods are given out to people who don't quite deserve them, but I can see this one, particularly as you think about what he has contributed to New Zealand (its international recognition, tourism, national pride, etc.).

Who needs a King or Prince.

Once a Knight is good enough for me! ;)

Unless it's a cowboy knight, they think 8 seconds is a good ride.

Happy fucking day, they've got what, a few letters in front of their name? A few letters with an association of centuries of repression, colonialism, conservatism and herediatism? Who needs a knighthood!?

What I say is congratulations Huxley, Britten, Hawking, Faraday, Lowry, Yeats, Vaughan Williams, Hardy, Pinter and all the rest who recognised the knighthood for what it was: a completely arbitrary set of letters that meant that some ignorant old sot liked them, and that all that really matters is achievment.

Happy New Year to you too, Crucifer :drunk:

PJ is now Sir Peter Jackson, KNZM (Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit).
Quote:
“One of the best things about growing up in New Zealand is that if you are prepared to work hard and have faith in yourself, truly anything is possible,” says Wellington’s newly-knighted Peter Jackson.

He sees his knighthood (which was announced today) as “recognition of the collective achievement of our terrific crews and our film pioneers … who trailblazed a path towards the creation of a modern Kiwi film industry”.

In the New Zealand Herald, Sir Peter says “I didn’t think anything would surpass the 2004 Academy Awards, but I was wrong. The feeling of gratitude and pride I have in accepting this honour from my home country is profound.”

The Herald is quoting from a written statement. It seems that Sir Peter is away on holiday – his first for many years.

Interesting tidbit on the background to the honours system in NZ:

Quote:
Quote:
New Zealand has made its most famous film-maker a knight in the reinstatement of the title for the first time in a decade.

Peter Jackson, maker of the Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, said the award was "better than the Oscars".

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark, who had abolished British knighthoods in 2000, was made a member of the Order of New Zealand.

This is the highest honour available in the country.

It carries no honorific and is limited to 20 living New Zealanders at any one time.

Sir Peter Jackson. It has a nice ring to it. Besides, it will drive the purists absolutely batty.
