I hope I haven't overpraised it!!!

No, I don't think I have. Images from the movie have been going through my mind all day. The flowers, the jungle animals, the incredible trees. I don't know how many of you here have read the Pern books? The people who made Avatar could do a wonderful Pern. It's the level of detail that blows one away - it seems that every leaf is unique.

Don't expect great drama. The two main characters are very engaging, though.

I've had just about enough of your Gollum-bashing. :pout:

j/k but I still think he looks great so maybe that means Avatar's graphics will put me in a state of catatonic bliss. Which it could, because I've been saving fashion photos lately and it's hard to take care of the drool sometimes, these things are so beautiful.

Saw it today. I give it a C+.

Story: a pretty good plot made utterly dull by a cast of nothing but clichéd characters and lots of clichéd dialog. And pretty predictable too. I've certainly sat through worse though; I didn't suffer through this.

Visuals: technically, yes, this is astonishing stuff, way beyond anything else we've ever seen. As I understand it, almost everything we see on screen is fake but it's often hard to believe. That jungle is real. Aesthetically though? I found the visuals garish and gaudy, damn near every thing drenched in tacky neons and pastels. Very little real beauty on display sadly.

Until the grand, spectacle-filled action sequences kicked into full gear later in the movie, I was pretty bored and underwhelmed overall. Those action sequences are a sight to behold though, and ultimately ended up saving what was shaping up to be a total dud for me. But just barely.

***GIANT MEGA SPOILER TO ANSWER LALI'S QUESTION ABOUT WHO DIES!!!***

Nearly every single named character in the movie dies except the protagonist and his love interest.

Off to see it on Imax 3D (not in Gib of course) - our first time on Imax - on Jan 1. Seems an appropriate way to usher in a new decade.

Well I just got back from seeing it. Visually it is stunning, wow is about all I can say about it. And *E* I am sorry but as cutting edge as Gollum was, the Navi are better. Technology improves and this bodes well for the next two Hobbit films. One thought was that I hope GDT and PJ emplore a good deal of this technology.

Spoilers

My daughter, being a true LoTRs fan, said the Navi would be like the Elves, if the Elves came back today.

Also I thought the story was a mix of Apacolypse Now, Dances With Wolves, the American Revolution (never underestimate a small group of people against a super power).

There were parts of the scenery that reminded me of Viet Nam (the earth bound mountains) There was a ton of scenes that reminded me of a Monet paintings. The whole Roger Dean seemed more a salute to his work and was very small at that, IMHO.

I thought that the plot was the tired 'communicate' storyline that's being told by every film hack at the moment, with a touch of 'love mother earth' thrown in for good measure. The dialogue was tacky, the soundtrack was 'The Lion King' meets 'Independance Day' and the acting was ham from start to finish.

The only thing I can say is that when the visuals weren't gaudy, they were beautiful. Otherwise, I found it a waste of time.

Crucifer,

My review over on HOF states that Precious has a much better plot and is far better acted. Take the special effects away, and they are spectacular, the story is somewhat old hack.

I forgot to throw in there are parts that remind me of BSG.

Agree with Ara-anna. Couple of cringy lines, but my gog, what 3-D. Sometimes it was just like looking through a window.

Mixed emotions at the fact that, as I type, according to my calculations, Avatar will be overtaking ROTK as the second-highest grossing movie worldwide. Whoever directed the highest-grossing movie *has* to be worried, I'm sure.

Funny. Just noticed that Prisoner of Azkaban had the lowest Box Office of all the Harry Potters, and Sorcerers Stone has the highest. Which just goes to show why democracy is a bad idea! ;)

CITIZEN KANE was not such a big hit either.

I prefer to think that "tastes vary".

I don't think our little group here are "typical" movie fans. I think we tend to be older and more bookish. Which is why we're here in the first place, if you recall . . . ;)

Vison is right. I just finished a book myself. Colored each of the 28 pages and stayed in between the lines .....

most of the time......

they still will not give me crayons narrower than one-half inch wide for safety purposes. ;)

Um. I wonder how many of us are under 25?

I know at least one is over 65.
