Got into a discussion recently about what songs are the most beautiful to set the mood for valentines Day or any other romantic event.
I opted for "Somewhere" from WEST SIDE STORY while others favored "The Way You Look Tonight", "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and "You Are So Beautiful".

So if you were making a CD of romantic stuff - what would you include on it?

If I answer your question on music, SF then you must choose a painting for me over on HoF, okay???

I would choose "Wonderful Tonight" by Clapton, as it's a favourite of my husband and I. I also love Roberta Flack's "The First Time (ever I saw your face)"

Storybook Love from the Princess Bride. Hallelujah written by Leanard Cohen sung by Allison Crowe. For Crying Out Load - Meatloaf

One time in Denver someone once sung The Way You Look Tonight to me, but that was a different me.

Storybook Love however was sang to me just recently....by a farm boy.

oh shoot I didn't add The Sleeping Beauty Waltz. Of course any slow waltz is romantic in strong enveloping arms.

Groovy Kind of Love -- Phil Collins
Somebody -- Depeche Mode
A Question of Lust -- Depeche Mode

(Those were off the top of my head. The rest is from scrolling through my iTunes.)

ETA: I still wouldn't say this is an inclusive list. It really just depends on what mood is trying to be set--sweet and romantic, fun and naughty, relaxed and loving, etc.

Green Eyes -- Coldplay
Let's Go to Bed -- The Cure (rather direct and to the point ;) )
Lovesong -- The Cure
Annie's Song -- John Denver
Stripped -- Depeche Mode
The Only One -- Evanescence
Bring Me to Life -- Evanescence
She's Every Woman -- Garth Brooks
The Red Strokes -- Garth Brooks
Love Me Tonight -- Great Big Sea
Captain Wedderburn -- GBS
Sea of No Cares -- GBS
Somedays -- GBS
I'm a Rover -- GBS
Can't Stop Falling -- GBS
Bad As I Am -- GBS (There's a pattern here!)
Need You Tonight -- INXS
Never Tear Us Apart -- INXS
What You Need -- INXS
Supermassive Black Hole -- Muse
Bliss -- Muse
Undisclosed Desires -- Muse
I Belong to You -- Muse
Find a Way to My Heart -- Phil Collins
Fortress Around Your Heart -- Sting
You Still Touch Me -- Sting
All Four Seasons -- Sting
Mad About You -- Sting
It's Probably Me -- Sting
The Dress Looks Nice on You -- Sufjan Stevens
Golden -- Switchfoot
She Blinded Me With Science -- Thomas Dolby (LOL!)
A Man and a Woman -- U2
With or Without You -- U2
Get on Your Boots -- U2
I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight -- U2

Those are good additions.

Eric Clapton - You Look Wonderful Tonight is a beautiful song .... kind of an update of the old Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields standard. I love the story behind it - how this woman is taking care of this guy, probably an older guy with a trophy on his arm, and he knows he is rather pathetic and way past his prime but the woman still lights up the room even when he is the only other person in it.

Funny thing about that other song - The Way You Look Tonight .... I was only familiar with the Frank Sinatra uptempo swing version and thought it was this neat song about this happy guy complimenting a woman he was with. Then I heard Tony Bennet sing it really slowly - almost talking - and listened to the words especially the opening lines. It is a terribly sad song. This guy knows that the woman he is looking at will soon be lost to him and the memory of her face will be all he has in the low times to come. I still like the uptempo version but that slower version is just hauntingly beautiful.

I keep wanting to say something on this, but everything I start to type sounds terribly grumpy and unpleasant and I keep deleting the posts. I'll try again:

I don't believe in Valentines day. [edit] It's a bad thing. [edit] To have a special day to say "I love you" on belittles all those other "I love you"s that happen all the rest of the year. To give a message of love because you are told to because it is a particular holiday means nothing. [edit]

I won't be doing anything special on 2/14/10. [edit] It's just another day. I won't be attempting to manipulate moods with music or any other means. [edit] [edit] What he feels, he feels. What I feel, I feel. I'm not going to try to coerce him to feel a particular way on that day.

V day pisses me off.

Despite all the editing, I didn't succeed in being pleasant and non grumpy, did I? :doh1:

You did succeed in conveying that you were trying very hard not to be grumpy and unpleasant - and that's just as good (in my opinion anyway :D ).

:D Not quite.

We don't celebrate Valentine's Day either. No cards, no flowers, no chocolate, no special dinners. I will sometimes do cute things for the girls (like get them candy or stuffed animals or something), but I don't consider it a "real" holiday.

I don't see anything wrong with being reminded to tell the people you love that you love them, though. And, sometimes, it helps to have a day set aside for that purpose. Yes, of course, we should be doing it all along, but I still don't see the harm in being reminded, if you need that sort of thing.

We just don't celebrate it because we don't want to feel pressured to buy stuff for each other. We don't celebrate Sweetest's Day either.

And, those songs were for me, not him. They remind me of certain things (pleasant memories), so they make me feel a certain way. I have no idea what songs will remind him of anything, with the exception of Groovy Kind of Love, which is our song.

Hubby and I are going to a concert tomorrow night...it's entitled "The Food of Love...a concert of music for Valentine's Eve" and our youngest son will be performing with the cathedral choir.

I think that will make it especially romantic!!

Anyway, Maria, pretend that this is just a survey of people's favourite romantic songs, and tell us yours anyway! :D

Each year my husband feels he has to do an attitude check with me, a sort of "OK, we are still ignoring this holiday, right?" There's such societal pressure for him to do *something* that even though he knows me as well as anyone could, he still feels the need to check.

Today's conversation went, "We still aren't doing anything for Sunday, are we? No cards, no flowers, no candy?" "No, " I say, :suspicious: "Why would we?" " I don't know, just checking." "Are you still the envy of your peers because of my attitude?" :D He laughs and says yes, he is, and tells me again how very much he loves me.

The look in his eyes when he said that is worth a jillion gifts.

edit: Nienna, I don't have a favorite romantic song. One we enjoy is "Paradise by the Dashboard lights" by MeatLoaf. Is that romantic? :LMAO:

It's about the complete opposite of romance, actually. It's more about lust and being mercenary and stubbornly sticking to one's word. But it's funny.

"Paradise By the Dashboard Light" is a great song Maria. Proclaim it loudly.

I don't think Valentine's Day is a bad holiday, but I don't think there should just be one day of love. Every day should be a day of love.

Anyway, here's my non-inclusive list. Many of these are not traditional love songs but are beautiful nevertheless.

Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns 'N' Roses
America - Simon and Garfunkel
Desperado - The Eagles
As Long As You're Mine - Wicked soundtrack
Yesterday - The Beatles
Your Song - Elton John
Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
Rocky Mountain High - John Denver
Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin
Music of the Night - Phantom of the Opera
Heart of Gold - Neil Young
Summertime - Gershwin (sung by Peter Gabriel)
Time - Pink Floyd
Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Ashokan Farewell - I don't know who wrote this

Faithfu' Johnny - traditional Scottish song

Best. Love song. Ever.
Quote:
When will you come again, ma faithfu' Johnie,
When will you come again?
"When the corn is gathered,
And the leaves are withered,
I will come again, ma sweet and bonny,
I will come again."

Then will you meet me here, ma faithfu' Johnie,
Then will you meet me here?
"Though the night were Hallowe'en,
When the fearfu' sights are seen,
I would meet thee here, ma sweet and bonny,
I would meet thee here."

O come na by the muir, ma faithfu' Johnie,
O come na by the muir.
"Though the wraiths were glist'ning white
By the dim elf-candles' light
I would come to thee, ma sweet and bonny,
I would come to thee."

And shall we part again, ma fathfu' Johnie?
Shall we part again?
"So lang's my eye can see, Jean,
That face so dear to me Jean,
We shall not part again, ma sweet and bonnie,
We shall not part again."
(It's on my mind because I'll be performing it in June. Be there or be square.)

First movement of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto no. 2.
Third Movement of Rach's second symphony.
Set me as a seal upon thy heart: William Walton.

To name but a few...

ETA: Only the last one is actually sung, but all three would certainly set the mood!

Thinking about things

Adding to my list

November Rain G-n-R
The Dance - Brooks
To Make You Feel My Love - Brooks
You and You Alone - Vince Gill
Layla - Cream
Beth - Kiss
Unchained Melody
One Moment More - Mindy Smith
Anyway - Martina McBride
I would have loved you anyway - Trisha Yearwood
Georgia Rain - Trisha Yearwood
You're Beautiful - James Blunt
With or without You - U2
Laura's Theme - Dr. Zhivago
Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Fields of Gold - Sting

and ....

a little known Bruce Springsteen song off of Devils and Dust, Reno, it's really really adult themed and is a very sad love song. If one likes sad love songs.

There's a ton of others out there that are classic songs that I love as love songs. But I have to run now...things to do.

And a waltz and slow dance are two different things, with the right man a fast waltz is breath taking and if done right can totally sweep a girl off her feet in a good way.
