This site lists "the overall rankings for the best albums in history as determined by their aggregate positions in over 1,800 different greatest album charts":

http://www.besteveralbums.com/overall.php

Here's their top 20 all-time (they also break it down by decade, which has some fascinating results IMO):

1. Radiohead OK Computer (1997)
2. The Beatles Revolver (1966)
3. Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
4. The Beatles Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts... (1967)
5. The Beatles Abbey Road (1969)
6. The Beatles White Album (1968)
7. Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
8. The Clash London Calling (1979)
9. Nirvana Nevermind (1991)
10. The Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground And Nico (1967)
11. The Beach Boys Pet Sounds (1966)
12. Radiohead The Bends (1995)
13. Radiohead Kid A (2000)
14. Bob Dylan Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
15. Arcade Fire Funeral (2004)
16. Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here (1975)
17. Radiohead In Rainbows (2007)
18. U2 The Joshua Tree (1987)
19. The Beatles Rubber Soul (1965)
20. The Who Who's Next (1971)

Of special note to me: my beloved Radiohead have finally dethroned The Beatles perenial #1 spot on these lists. :horse: :D :D

Yeah, what's up with Radiohead? That's interesting!

What, no Michael Jackson? I thought "Thriller" would have been on there!

Not to mention A Night at the Opera outside the Top 50? Bizarre.

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, And knew that somehow I could find my way back; Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too - So I stayed in the darkness with you

I love the Beatles and Radiohead is great but there is more to music than spamming 20 spots with two bands. Pick the best of their work or better yet throw one of the Beatles Anthologies up there and expand the list to show a range. There is more to great music than the Beatles and Radiohead.

From across the distant shore

Why do you weep?

Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

That list feels off to me. I like Radiohead but thier first album Pablo Honey was easily thier best and it doesn't make the list. I agree with Ok Computer and the Bends making the list, but In Rainbows, really? Most even hardcore RH fans I know can't agree on liking more than two songs from the album. Personally I hated it with a passion. Thom Yorke has some has some work to do...

Some of the albums listed aren't the artist/band's best work, they feel like they're up there for what they accomplished, not what they sounded like. London Calling was definately not the Clash's best album. Nevermind was what brought rock back to the world and dethroned Michael Jackson and pop but it wasn't Nirvana's best work.

I'm sure anyone could name a dozen albums they'd rather see on the top 20, but really, not even Bob Marley and the Wailers' Esodus? Classic.

I do very much like the Arcade Fire squeaking into that list though. Great band that will never tire on me! :)

No Rolling Stones?

I have a suspicion that Radiohead's PR firm had a lot to do with making this list.

I've never, to my knowledge, heard anything by Radiohead. :D

Well here ya go.
Be forewarned unless you like slow tempo-ed emo wailing.

Precisely what I don't like about Radiohead progressively on each album. I do still like a lot of their stuff through the years, but great guitar riffs and crazy melodies are more often than not tempered with Yorke whining. I did like a lot of Hail to the Thief, probably my fave after Pablo Honey. They did a lot for rock and roll in the '90s. They really were the band to be feared!

Umm, that album has been nearly-universally panned by everyone since forever to the point were Radiohead essentially disowned it and no longer play songs of it.

Oh, and there's a difference between sad music and whiny music. Just FYI. :P

I knew I'd prolly piss you off Yov, sorry! :)

In Rainbows got a lot of fame and praise for the way it was released, for starting something that might be very popular some day. IMHO, as I told my GF who's a massive RH fan, they came up with the concept of give what you want for the album because they knew it was mediocre. :P

They don't play Pablo honey because there are no 'massive hits' off the album except for the obvious, which Yorke won't play at all. I still think its the best sounding, it was real Brit Rock! Their music because more technical and innovative after which I really like, just the voice bugs me more often than not.

That being said, this is turning into a RH thread real quick.

Another one that surprises me is Queen, no album on the top 20...

Listening to Innuendo right now... :D
