It's just something to do when I have some free time at work, vison. I never even try this stuff at home.

I tried much of yesterday afternoon to do this hummingbird pattern, but either the instructions are bad, or my understanding of them is wrong. I just can't get to step 8 to produce the shape they are showing, and all steps after that don't work out right afterwards.

I kinda wanted to make a hummingbird and butterfly mobile to hang over my origami flowers, but I think I'm going to have to find a different pattern somewhere. I can't make this one work. *pout*

Actually, I guess it's step 5 I'm having trouble with. I can refold the stretched bird base to bird base with different internal layering, but then it has a triangle between the two legs that isn't in the pictures.

edit: w00t! I finally got that step right and everything's falling into place afterwards! :) Should have a bird soon!

Yes, honestly, I looked at that, and my eyes glazed over. I am only cut out (ha!) for the most basic of origami patterns.

That is awesome. Not just the hummingbird, but the whole scene.

Those are amazing! I looked up the artist, Hojyo Takashi and found a video of someone making the violinist. *click* I haven't found any of the actual patterns online yet, but there certainly do seem to be a lot of youtube tutorials out there!

I haven't been doing any origami since my arthritis started up again (due to unintentional month long ingestion of gluten) but once that dies down again, I'll be trying some new patterns. Nothing like Hojyo Takashi's :Q but something. :)

Maria, try this link: http://www.origami-usa.org
I used to belong to this organization. They have some simple diagrams for free, lots of more complicated ones in their bookstore and their Collection - spiral books made up of members' diagrams for each year's convention. The cover art on the 1994 collections (two hands and a sailboat) is mine, though not any of the diagrams inside.

Many of the most complicated art is done wet-folded, so that the paper can be molded almost like paper mache.

This site looks useful, too: http://www.origamispirit.com/

It's great that they have U-tube videos now. Especially for those folds that make absolutely no sense in the diagrams.

Right now my knuckles are too achy to think about it, but thanks for the links. Google works well for finding patterns, too.

Very irritated. Tried to make this origami ball:

It consists of making 30 triangle-like pieces and than linking them together. It's easy at first but as you get farther along the linking gets harder and harder and by the end, it's nearly impossible. I've been trying connect the last few pieces for forever and I'm just about ready to give up. :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

I think I'd quickly be shredding the little pieces and tossing them in the air. I'll stick to single pieces of paper for my origami.

So I had to cheat and use glue to get it done but, damnit, it's done.

I like it! It looks like it ought to have a little light glowing inside, for some reason. :)

I thought the same thing. :) If I can figure out a way to put one in there I might.
