Is it spoiler-free?

Can you link directly to it? I don't want to poke around in that forum until I've seen the movie...

Nope, full of spoilers.

You want me to post a spoiler free version here?

Hmm. Ok this will be tricky.

Overall its great, but it is RADICALLY different from the book. Now, unlike Faramir in Osgiliath or sending Sam home, there's nothing thats actually radically changed, but there are huge chunks of this movie that were completely made up. For the sake of spoilers, I will avoid all those sections.

The effects are great, but very much on a par with AUJ. If you disliked Goblintown, its likely you will dislike the Barrel escape. Real OTT action sequence, fun but silly. Beorn was cool, but brief. Not how I imagined him, but it worked. I imagine we'll see more of him in the EE. Mirkwood was good, but very condensed. I know some people will claim we could have done without an extended Barrel ride and instead had the long slow darkness of Mirkwood, but honestly, which is more cinematic? The Spider attack is brilliant. One of the best set pieces in all the movies. Faster and smaller than Shelob, scary as hell. The Elvenkings Halls are great and very true to the book, but with the added Tauriel scenes, which I liked. Bard is fab, as are his family. The Master of Laketown is a bit too Lord Melchett on first hearing, but improves over time.

Conversation with Smaug is Epic. Simply Awesome.

There's an added scene that I really disliked but I'll say no more about that.

In parallel to this we have the Dol Guldur storyline which ties in to the return of Sauron. It works pretty well, but its all setup.

Overall I'd give it a solid 8/10

Thanks! Now my curiosity is piqued - I'll try to see it over the weekend.

I think Mirkwood could be very cinematic - I thought that the Moria sequence in FOTR* was magnificent. I was hoping for something similar in The Hobbit.

I'm looking forward to reading it after I've seen the movie. :D

I've heard they left out Tauriel in the book. Maybe the budget ran out?

Did you go see it, Jude? Frelga?

I saw it yesterday and posted my thoughts on HoF. It might be hard to post my thoughts here, spoiler-free.

ETA: I'll try.

So I saw it today.

It was pretty good. I didn't love it, but there were parts of it that I did love. I loved Smaug. Loved, loved, loved him! That was one awesome dragon! Bilbo is, once again, awesome. (Martin Freeman outperforms everyone else in the film, imo, with the exception of being on par with Ian McKellan.)

I did enjoy Legolas, and I didn't mind Tauriel either. Some of the action sequences were over-the-top, but I do love my Elves. (I enjoyed seeing Thranduil's realm.)
[SHOW]
Beorn, meh. Dol Guldur, meh. I did enjoy some of the audio effects when Gandalf faces the Necromancer.
(One of my favorite things from LotR was the audio effect when the light blast emerges from Minas Morgul.) The spiders were sufficiently creepy and awful. That was a good job! Some of the stuff that I think is lame others obviously find funny.
[SHOW]
(The barrel action sequence, for example.)
People were laughing in the theatre.

I liked Bard, though he looks so much like Orlando Bloom that it's kind of distracting!
[SHOW]
I loved the golden Smaug at the end!

I knew that ending was coming, but, obviously, most of the rest of the theatre did not. You could hear the exclamations everywhere. (Basically, moaning and groaning about being left hanging. Well played, PJ.)
So, overall, quite good! Not fantastic, but quite good. Honestly, Smaug made up for a lot.

I haven't yet - I was planning to, but that's been put off until next weekend.

So overall, you liked it less than episode 1?

I think so, yes. It definitely felt like a middle movie to me, with too much filler. But the scenes that were good were very good.

And, like I said, Smaug covers a multitude of sins. He's that awesome!

The brief glimpses of him in Episode 1 were awesome, too.

I imagine the dialogue between him & Bilbo must be top-notch.

It is, and there are several other scenes where Freeman's acting is just superb. It's very subtle but powerful.

I also liked Thranduil, even if he is a jerk.

That brings up an interesting point - I thought the Wood-Elves were jerks in the Hobbit, even though Tolkien seemed to want us to like them.

And I thought Gloín's point was well-taken in the Council of Elrond, when he pointed out that they were so nice to Gollum, but not so much to the dwarves.

Freeman's little moments in the scene where he's got the dwarves in the barrels is a highlight of the movie. :)

Jude: not a spoiler but a warning - the action in this movie is really really really ridiculously wildly madly over-the-top (you could add the adjectives 'delightfully' or 'stupidly' depending who you ask; I'm largely in the former camp while I believe Lali's in the latter). It's so far over-the-top that the people beneath it look like tiny little ants. You have been warned. :P

I thought some of the barrel stuff was fine, delightful, even. But Bombur
[SHOW]
(?) in the spinning barrel scene was ridiculous, imo.
Legolas was mostly fine, but
[SHOW]
standing on the dwarves' heads was dumb.
Otherwise, it was rather good. I can pick and choose like that and not dismiss the whole thing.

I did not mind the golden
[SHOW]
dwarf statue, but I was a bit confused at first.
I actually did laugh when Thorin was standing on
[SHOW]
Smaug's snout.
Honestly, I didn't like the orcs. I mean, I know I'm not supposed to like them, but I didn't believe them, if that makes sense. They weren't evil, just dumb.

Were they like the goblins in Episode 1?

I didn't enjoy Goblintown at all in Episode 1, no.

Well, they're much less goofy, if that helps. They're supposed to be more menacing and all of that. I just found them...I'm not sure. Like dumb jocks or bullies or something.
