A strange topic for me to start, since I refuse to ever leave a movie unfinished, but I was wondering about the rest of you. Some questions:
  • 1. Have you ever walked out of a movie?
    2. How long did you give it before you left?
    3. Did you ask for, or get, your money back?
    4. Did you ever see that film at a later date and stuck around for the whole thing?
    5. How about a rented movie? Did you ever give up on one of those and send them back to the store before you finished it?
Personally, I don't feel that I can judge a movie until I've seen it at least two or three times, and walking out of the cinema is inconceivable. Getting my money back is not the problem - I love going to the movies and the experience itself can greatly increase my enjoyment of the film I'm watching. I also happen to be drawn to schlocky B-movies, even if I bitch about them afterwards. ;) Point being - yeah, some flicks are bad, but I'll see them through to the end. I'd like to know why others do not.

I came close to running out on two films:
  • -A couple weeks ago during BOOGEYMAN. Fucking despised that movie. It had a great first scene (though way too reminiscent of the start of DARKNESS FALLS), but afterwards, every scare was a result of the soundtrack blaring in, or some weird imagery being spliced in accompanied by loud sound effects. Piss off!!! It was incredibly frustrating. I sat there the whole time gritting my teeth and couldn't wait for it to be over. I've never been so angry while watching a movie (well, for reasons quite like that). I was with a friend so I couldn't really leave, though.

-In early '01 when I saw that Charlize Theron/Keanu Reeves flick SWEET NOVEMBER. Quite possibly the first movie I saw in a theatre that I hated! Was actively hating it while I watched it, and that doesn't happen much at all. Recently, I tend to think of funny things to say in the reviews I hope to write about the movies I see, but I'm not trying to hate them, I'm just trying to remember them better. But SWEET NOVEMBER was so awful that I was scowling like an 80-year-old listening to rap music. Manipulative piece of shit. The stupid audience was falling for it, too, which just got me angrier. They were all crying and laughing at the dumb jokes and I just wanted to throttle them all.
Perhaps some films I should walk out on, for the sake of everyone else. :D:D

Anyway, it's a bit of a problem for me, because I've really racked up the late fees over the years. I always seem to grab a half dozen films at a time, am allowed to keep them for a week, but get turned off by the task at hand and don't start watching them until a few days before they're due back, and then of course I need to watch them twice and so I end up trying to watch 12 movies in three days. :P That's with Blockbuster, though. In the summer, I signed up to Zip.ca, which is the Canadian version of Netflix (you rent DVDs online and they mail them to you). I pay a flat fee every month and can rent as many or as few films as I want, and can keep them as long as I want. So guess how often I send a movie back as soon as I've watched it? Yeah, I tend to keep them around for months on end with the intention of fully digesting them more than once, but I just end up not watching them at all and paying like $30 CDN a month for the service. Eep! I hardly think I should start ditching movies if I don't like them after twenty minutes, but this is hardly working for me either. :P

Only twice have I ever been tempted. The first was Darkman, which was absolutely abysmal. It hurt to see Liam Neeson brought so low!

The second was Van Helsing, and it really pained me to see Hugh Jackman in it. I have such admiration for him as an actor and singer in Films, Musicals and Theatre that it was embarassing to see him in this steaming pile of manure.

That said, I never leave a movie. I even find it hard to switch off a crap movie on TV.

Same here, Alatar. I hate leaving things unfinished. Now, if only I had the drive to get off my ass and do that, I'd be fine. :P

It was the same with books as well. I actually stopped reading after I got fed up with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest because I wasn't enjoying it, but I couldn't move on to another book until I finished it. Argh, I'm terrible. Hell, I've done that with innumerable threads at TORC. Aunties, for example. I get behind in all the posts but don't want to ignore anyone, yet I don't have the time or energy to read through everything that I've missed, so I end up "hiding" somewhat, entirely.

Sorry, I will keep this restricted to film talk. ;) Especially because I asked about why you left, not why I cannot. :blackeye lol

I saw Pasolini's "120 days of Sodom" and was so frightened, shocked and put aback by the cruelty and pornography of it that I kept murmuring to myself "I'll go now. I'll go now" until the movie was over.

After the first twenty minutes of "Dancer in the dark" I went out and asked a cinema clerk whether they've got the focus and everything right, as the movie was distorted beyond recognition. He looked at me with pained sympathy and said "Stay, It's supposed to be like this, it'll soon be over." I needed a drink after that film. It was so annoying.

And then, there was "O brother, where art thou" which I brought back to the video rental after 1/3 of it - too boring and confusing.

I think I've heard of that one, Mumpy, and recently too. 120 DAYS OF SODOM is based on the Marquis de Sade's book, is it not? I probably came across it through reading comments on the IMDB for Luis Buñuel's films (like UN CHIEN ANDALOU), when people were naming the most disgusting/disturbing movies they'd ever seen.

Of course, I immediately went to Zip.ca to see if they had this one available. :P Unfortunately no, but I've had CALIGULA on my list for ages. :LMAO: Haven't yet gotten the urge to see it, though. Probably a good thing!

I enjoyed O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?, but perhaps I wanted to because it was up for a few Oscars. I only saw it the one time, but I adore that "Man of Constant Sorrow" song, and laugh fondly whenever I hear it. :D Own the soundtrack, actually. Not that I play it much.

Yes, I would hate to see it in book form :Q

There have been a few films I have walked out of, and many more I nearly did (like ROTK, but that was because of the audience).

There are a few I regret watching on DVD/video. I just feel that I will never get several hours of my life back. King Arthur springs to mind, I even bought that sucker :bawl:

I would have walked out of TTT if my family wasn't there loving it... I did leave and go back to stand in the back in case I had to go throw up (seriously).

That's about it. I did stop watching "Ladykillers" about half an hour in when I rented it... I just had NO interest in the film at all...

Solaris. ( the George Cloony remake )

That's the closest I ever came to wanting to walk out of a movie. But I stayed there to the end, because as others have said, I hate leaving things unfinished. And it was like a train wreck - couldn't stop watching. And i kept hoping something would happen! That would undo the wasted minutes of my life in THAT movie.

That reminds me, Hal.....

I made an effort to walk out of ROTK every time the Paths of the Dead came on. Bathroom break, popcorn refill, whatever. Just get me out of there!

I would have left during "Event Horizon" If I had thougt it might be good enough to see in the theater :)

As i was watcing it for free on TV... I had to see how it ended, although I'm pretty sure I was doing other things at the same time... It wasn't worth it...

Hmmm, something tells me that I've got VERY low standards when it comes to enjoying movies...

I actually really liked "King Arthur". Any period epic is worth watching to me regardless if it's historically accurate or not. It's the ultimate movie experience of "being transported into another world/time". Sorry you didn't enjoy the movie, Din. Surely Keira Knightley alone was worth the price? ;)

"Event Horizon" scared the crap out of me. It was extremely eerie and disturbing, the feeling stayed with me for a few days after. I guess I just get spooked easily but I did love the movie.

I'm never one to walk out of a bad movie either. And it's almost impossible when you're stuck in the theatre with a friend. I did seriously regret sitting through "Universal Soldier" starring Jean Claude Van Damm. Hey, I was 18, stupid, and saw it with a bunch of equally clueless girlfriends, way back when! Gimme a break!:oops:

(For *E* - I'll sit though ANY Keanu Reeves movie, anytime. That includes "A Walk in the Clouds" and "Sweet November"! Shhhh! It's a secret! I've got an already crummy rep to protect!

I loved KING ARTHUR, too, Myst. Clive Owen, w00t w00t!!!

I have mixed feelings towards Keanu. He's a shit actor, and I don't swoon for him whatsoever, but I think he's nice-looking enough, and he's Canadian so I want to give him a chance. I'll tell you why I go somewhat easy on him - he's very private, which I respect. Even those closest to him hardly know him at all, which intrigues me. He was engaged to a woman who was killed when she was carrying his baby, and that breaks my heart. So I have to say that I like Keanu the person, which makes me tolerate Keanu the Bad Actor. He's been okay before, though. I mean, he was perfect in the BILL & TED movies, and I thought he did fine in THE GIFT. By and large, he's simply mediocre. I hardly jump at the chance to watch his films, but I won't needlessly trash him. It makes me feel guilty.

hal, I really like Event Horizon, got it on DVD :P

I will walk out of a film if it's clear that watching the rest of it will be a complete waste of an hour or so of my life. This doesn't often happen though as I usually only go to the cinema to see things I'm pretty sure I'll like. The only film I've walked out of is "Evolution". In terms of rentals, I couldn't make it through a piece of complete dreck called something like "Scream if you know what I did last friday the 13th" - I'd hoped it would be amusing along the lines of "Scary Movie" but it wasn't.

You walked out of "Evolution"? The movie with the shampoo! No! :Q

Never walked out of any movie myself, but - for what it counts - I remember that hamlet on TORC walked out of "Fahrenheit 9/11"...

Yeah... Head & Shoulders :LMAO:
I thought "Evolution" was fun in a crappy way. But I was watching it mostly for the eye candy, aka David Duchovny.

I've only walked out of one film in my life, and that was "Top Gun", when I was 16 or so. Argh, how I hated Tom Cruise and the gung-ho, macho posturing, and the supposedly lovey-dovey stuff for the laydeez. My friends had convinced me (after much cajoling) to go see it with them. I left halfway through, completely disgusted.

I much preferred to watch films like "Au Revoir les Enfants", "Remando al viento" and "Oci Ciornie". Yes, I was a teenage snob. :D

Ber, you might get a laugh out of Maddox's piece on TOP GUN. :P I almost want to watch the movie because of it.

Funny TOP GUN-related story: there's a roller coaster at Paramount Canada's Wonderland named after the film, and the area surrounding the line-up is decorated to look like an air force. Must be pretty cool for the fans. But of course they play that Kenny Loggins song the whole time, and when you're in line for two hours.......

:Q  :LMAO:

I actually almost fell out of that rollercoaster last time I was there.

Good times.

First of all, I absolutely loved King Arthur. I've seen it twice, now, and actually bought it.

The only movie that I have wanted to walk out on was Titanic, but I was with several friends, so I couldn't. It is one of the worst movies that I have ever wasted my time seeing.
