Whyever would I want to add a last place choice? I didn't really like any past the first three anyway! ;) But thanks for the offer.

You're right. I already know what the last choice has to be. We're down to zero degrees of freedom.

My vote requires some explanation. If the "Mayor" position remains essentially the record-keeper function that we have currently given it I think that "Loremaster" is a much better name for that position, and that that role could easily be combined with this role (with perhaps having two loremasters with staggered terms). If my original idea of having the Mayor be a spokesperson is approved (which I doubt will happen), then I still think the functions that we have currently given to the "Mayor" position should be part of the Loremaster's job, not the Mayor's.

I hope that that makes some degree of sense. I find that I am not very understandable these days (if in fact I ever was).

Well, we can always call this role Loremaster and then decide to call the Mayor role Loremaster as well. . . .

BALLOT
Interim Vote on Creation of New Office

Question 1:
B. I do not agree to the creation of this Office

Question 2:
B. I do not agree with this statement

Question 3: The title of this office will be:

PLEASE RANK YOUR CHOICES with #1 being most preferred.
#1= C
#2=
#3=
#4=
#5=
#6=
#7=

I'll try to explain as well. I am voting concurrent with my philosophy that I like less government not more. I don't have any stong objections, I just think this role can be accomplished by any number of different people.

Question 1:
B. I do not agree to the creation of this Office

Question 2: This office would be an elected office, similar in nature and duration to the office of Mayor but with a different area of responsibility.

A. I agree with this statement

Question 3: The title of this office will be:

A. Bounder
B. Counselor
C. Hearing Facilitator
D. Loremaster
E. Monitor
F. Proctor
G. Watcher

PLEASE RANK YOUR CHOICES with #1 being most preferred.
#1= D
#2= B
#3= C
#4= E
#5= A
#6= G
#7= F

A note on my vote, too: I've seen that everybody who voted "no" on the first question, also voted "no" on the second - so I'm wondering whether that is necessary for a consistent vote?
I voted "yes" on the second question because if option A wins in question one and the office is created, I think it should be as described in question two.
If I got something wrong with these, please let me know! :)

Voronwe, I think I understand you, and I quite agree with your reasoning against the creation of this office. :)
Although at the moment I think that we don't need a special spokesperson, that's mainly because I can't imagine who he or she should be speaking to. Maybe something will come up when we talk about board-ownership that will make a representative seem like a good idea, and if so, we can still create the office (and just call it "Speaker", for example ;) ) ).

TH: If I got something wrong with these, please let me know!

What you did is OK. Not everyone has voted A-A and B-B. And everyone has expressed a name preference in case the office is created, so I understand that the votes are conditional.

I am concerned about something. There have been several committee members expressing confusion and/or a sense of not being up to date on the current discussion.

Therefore I'm wondering if some votes on this new position (which admittedly I think it extremely important that we institute) may be being cast without a full awareness or understanding of the reasons that have been put forward, as to why the position is needed.

In other words, I'm wondering if we've had a full enough discussion of this issue before putting it to a vote.

Thanks, Jny! :)

Cerin, I'm one of those who have admitted to not having followed all current discussion threads equally thoroughly. So, yes, I might have just missed the one argument that would have changed my mind.
But I have read things here and there, and what I've read has not led me to revise my intitial opinion on this question.
I guess if we discussed for long enough, we might indeed reach agreement on each issue, but I don't think that's reasonably possible.
I'm sure votes have been cast without thorough reading before, just based on the spontaneous opinion of the member on reading the ballot, which I think is acceptable, too. :)

No :Q - what does a speaker do in those novels? (Though I guess the answer will be something fearful!)
(The ;) was just because it would be such an obvious title for the office, not because I was thinking of any hidden meaning. :) )

Too much to try to really explain to someone who hasn't read the books, but the leaders of the Second Foundation are called Speakers. Even more remarkably (in terms of this discussion), the head of the First Foundation (who rules over millions of worlds) is called the Mayor.

Someone should go all (old) Battlestar Galactica and run for "Imperious Leader."

I always liked that one—it's wrong on so many levels.
