The mayor will no doubt keep the Cod of Conduct as a badge of office.

Wow, thanks for the summary, Jny!

I still think the cons are more convincing, but in case we do have the office, "Loremaster" is really cool! :D

Forget it! Shackles, whips and a drumbeat!!!

:D

I hate to admit that Loremaster brings to my mind people playing some kind of game. Please set me straight, folks, I'd love to hop on this particular bandwagon!

Well, Cerin, I grant that one probably wouldn't have business cards printed up. . . . However, I don't see any reason not to have fun with the names of the roles on this site. And Loremaster has the advantage of being roughly descriptive of the job. It also has the connotation of an advisor or teacher, rather than someone who runs things.

Loremaster is fine. At the moment I'm tired of the seriousness of the England discussion and its somewhat refreshing. It reminds me of why I'm here.

I'm still troubled that this role, whatever we name it, is not seen by some as separate and distinct. This not only shows up in the discussion, but in the names offered such as deputy mayor and jury foreperson. Conflating the roles with the others, shows a lack of understanding of the purpose. I had a discussion with a French judge last year about the differences in the structure of our legal systems. There are significant differences between Anglo-Saxon and Roman law which are the two separate foundations. The different perspectives here may be rooted in the importance of precedent in Anglo-Saxon law and the total lack of concern for precedent in Roman law. I think German law is largely based on Roman law and its derivatives (i.e. canon law). Roman law seems to have allowed an extreme amount of latitude on procedure, so established procedure is correspondingly less important.

I'm not complaining, so much as trying to understand.

Wasn't Tolkien anglo-saxon?

Idylle,

I will not include in the ballot titles that are misleading as to function.

It seems to me that something as fluid as an internet site, and especially one with a foundational charter, would end up relying heavily on precedent ... on the history of past decisions and how the charter has been interpreted.

I don't want to start outlining that in this Article, though, because it is so difficult to foresee how this will come about. I think that we should lay out basic procedures as carefully as we can, and then let things evolve naturally.

I am not convinced of the necessity of a second office... but be it.

Alatar has the nudge of finding cool names (remind me of asking you for advice if ever one day I'll have a third child...) even if Loremaster makes me a bit nostalgic - it reminds of the days of glory on TORC when I used to be a Mithril Knight of Lore... (nostalgic now)

I'm gone now until late tonight, so I will open this to voting Wednesday morning EST (that's late morning/early afternoon for Europeans.)

Yup, that's right (about German law) - maybe that's why I'm not up to this discussion! ;) :D

I think Loremaster is exactly right (as far as I understand the office so far) - the charter is our lore, and the idea of the office is someone who knows the charter inside out, i.e. a Loremaster. :D
(And I still think that sounds like exactly the description of the Mayor's office! :P ;) )

Except that the mayor is in charge of the admin and jury pools.

If he's in charge of the pools, he could handle a couple of cods and salmons in addition easily, I'm sure! ;) :D

I agree with Hobby. :) In terms of the duties that we have thus far assigned to "the Mayor" Loremaster seems like a perfect name.
