I guess I just don't see any need to shorten the period below three months. It doesn't restrict the member in any way. But I would feel more confident that a member was "reformed" after three months of civil behavior than after one or two.

It's essentially invisible unless the member does implode, and then it protects the board.

So do you think we should add 2 months as a compromise choice?

:)

My shizophrenia is showing.

I'm inclined to be forgiving and tolerant, which makes me want to agree with Axordil. This attitude could inflate the amount of activity, if there are members who continually live on the edge. Prim's more intolerant :D attitude minimizes the activity, at almost no expense. However, I'm inclined to want to minimize the period during which a member is exposed to automatic consequences.

The consequences aren't really automatic, Idylle. There has to be another complete hearing about the new offense. The only difference is that this time, if the jury votes for a ban, the ban goes through with no vote of the membership.

So a member will only be banned by this quicker route if he actually commits a bannable offense during the probation period. I don't think that's too odious a burden for members who honestly don't want to commit such offenses.

And yes, I'm a hardass. It's time you knew. :D

Prim,

I know, but you're on a definite path. Usually when someone is a repeat offender there is some underlying problem of which the offense is a symptom. I suppose we aren't responsible for helping them fix that. So, to avoid recursion, I'll reluctantly agree with you.

Right now, one, two, three and six months are all choices on the ballot.

Six months is the web equivalent of twenty years. I'm actually more concerned with people FORGETTING someone is on probation if it goes that long...

Draft ballot looks fine to me.

It doesn't seem right that it could take up to a month to ban someone. I wish the process could be faster, but there's no other way to do it fairly. Who ever said beauracracy was fast? :P

:D

I think two months answers everyone's concerns.

Then I've been on Usenet and message boards for about nine hundred years now. And I registered on TORC about 75 years ago.

Damn, why won't you whippersnappers treat me with more respect! :rage:

Well, you get to vote on it, right? Vote for the probation period you like best. It *will* be an IRV.
