I agree with Din. I don't like ordinary. I have never liked ordinary.

But even more, I'm disappointed that yet another issue is likely to slow us down still more. I was hoping that we could start the other two votes soon and send the dispute resolution and member rights articles to the membership. Now we are going to have wait until a new ballot is devised and discussed and tweaked and discussed again and finally voted upon.

No, not at all.

If there were an enthusiastic response, I would have put a 'change it to ordinary' yes/no poll at the top of this thread, so that it could be made official while people were showing up for the other vote.

But the response is tepid, and it was not my intention to open a new issue for debate. That's the last thing we need right now after losing last week. And no one wants to be done with this more than I do.

Voronwe, you can lock this thread. It really was intended to be a thermometer, and the response doesn't justify a new vote.

I have no problem with doing that if we can do it concurrently with the other votes. If no one objects, let's do that.

Ok - thanks Voronwe, if you don't mind doing it.

I'll put up a poll for - hearings on a community disruption, hearings, ordinary hearings - whenever the vote opens on these other things.

Well, the time that I had suggested for starting the vote on the other ballots was midnight my time, which is 3 in the morning for you. I would be reluctant to start the other votes earlier then I had said they would start, but I don't see any reason why this one could not start earlier. Or, if you'd like, I could add the poll myself (bwahahaha!) at the same time the other votes start, so long as you provide me with the exact language that you want.

I would like to say I think it is extremely magnanimous of you, Voronwe, to agree to having a vote on something that was already voted on and came out your way the first time.

 :cheers

Thank you Cerin, that is very nice of you to say. :) But truly, if a majority of the committee wants to change the name, I have no problem with that at all. I just don't want to have a long discussion that is going to slow us down.

I think the least we can do for jnyusa is let her have one slightly distracting vote. :D Sounds like a plan, Voronwe...

Unless it means I have to give up on Prim serving me martinis.

Voronwe - if it's alright with everyone, I'll post this after I get back from teaching tonight ... around 10:00PM EST, or slightly later if I can keep my eyes open.

How about the Penalties vote ... why don't you just open that one when you open yours. It's just a post in the thread anyway, and you have my permission to change the title of the thread to NOW VOTING.

Cerin said, "I would like to say I think it is extremely magnanimous of you, Voronwe,"

Yes, it is, and I thank you. If the "violations of by-law" title had won, I would also be asking for us to rename it. I hated my own suggestion, too. :P

No fear on the martinis, Jn. :P I'll keep 'em coming as required.

Does this make me a minion?

That is precisely what I like about it, though! They are hearings about ordinary, commonplace matters - disagreements between friends or acquaintances, small disruptions - stuff of every day life.

But they're not. :) Disagreements between friends or acquaintances should be handled by the friends or acquaintances either privately or in the bike racks or with mediation. By definition, something that requires a hearing goes beyond those kind of ordinary disagreements and actually disrupts the community. ;)

I like ordinary, too, Imp. It's so--so undramatic and unalarming.

May I join you? :salmon:

Let me apologize in advance, since I may tend to wander. I've had very little sleep for days.

I like "ordinary" a lot.

It correctly positions this type of hearing to the rest, as in the use of Ordinary in liturgy to identify the simplest form of the type. Please note that the word is capitalized.

It has several uses related to legal procedure. One is from canon law (sorry Cerin) and concerns the assignment of a judicial task with limited jurisdiction. Another from US law is a judge with assumed jurisdiction rather than delegated.

I'm sure some of us grew up without ever seeing a Breviary, so the association just isn't there. I assume Voronwe and others are focused on the uses like commonplace and second-rate. If that is what it means to people, it may not be appropriate, but for me its a very nice fit.

Voronwe, is that your objection¿

I am going to open a poll on this, with thanks once again to Voronwe for agreeing to it.

Vote at your leisure. Voronwe can close the poll whenever the other two votes close.

And thanks to all of you for agreeing to reconsider the title of ¶4.

Since I don't mind either way and there is no 'neutral' option on the poll, I'm simply not going to click on anything. I'm happy with leaving or changing it.
